David's impression of Charlie last night was the best thing I have ever seen in my life.
In other news, I was genuinely thinking of getting my hair cut like Kym Marsh, but then I changed my mind.

Believe me, the appointment was booked first thing on Monday! I'm considering a shiny Kym Ryder-esque mightnight-black do The Corrie bosses must have bought a job lot of that hair dye and hosed the Connors down with it, maybe to distract from the fact they all have different accents. Even Carla has the same shiny black hair. It does look good though, especially on Kym. Blanche was on good form in tonight's episode: Tracy: I'm not in the mood for bleeding hearts. Blanche: Unless they've got a knife sticking out of them

Maybe they're trying to differentiate the new intake from the older ladies. It seems that you get past a certain age in Weatherfield and go honey blonde.
Rita's new pal looks like a cross between Big Mo and Minnie Mouse. I love her already.
The Tracey 'Psycho Killer qu'est-ce que c'est' is working quite well, despite being inherently dramatic (note to the producer, please don't make a habit of exit by death as Audrey only has so many black outfits). Even Ken managed to turn in a decent performance last night.

I don't think we should let this pass without comment...
Craig Charles - BACK!
And no-one mentioned anything. He knows everything that's been going on and happily chats away to people he has never met.
Bad Corrie, bad.

Perhaps Lloyd's been doing the night shift. Or in rehab...

Rita really is tedious. She's so wooden.

Rita really is tedious. She's so wooden. Agreed, she needs pensioning off along with Ken Barlow, the Duckworths and Betty Turpin. They're all well past their sell by dates.

The treatment of the character of Chesney is the street is really pissing me off at the moment.
How old is he meant to be? About 12 or 13 or something? Why are they still fawning over him like he's a little kiddy, trying to entice him back with sausage and chips and a can of pop? What a load of bollocks. If he was a real boy that age there is no way he'd be round doing paints at Sophie's or something shit like that. He could probably look after his bloody self.
I do hope they let him grow up rather than keeping him like a little boy until he's about 16.

I remember an article in a newspaper about ten years ago that listed all the characters in Corrie that they thought needed to be pensioned off, and I only remember what they said about Betty Turpin. We're sure she had a point at one time, but now she only exists to make hotpots and Les Dawson faces behind the bar . That was ten years ago, and she doesn't even do that now. Corrie more than most soaps seems to be like be like an old person's house stuffed with dusty, broken old family heirlooms that everyone feels sentimental/awkward about throwing out because of the memories. It's full of old characters that are just there and don't do anything. I suppose they have become 'part of the furniture' along with the cobbles.

That is the point of Coronation Street though! Continuity. Its what sets it apart from every soap on tv.

I think they've realised that puberty is not going to be particularly kind to Chesney and are trying to make the most of his cuteness while it lasts. After that, they'll probably turn him into the new Curly. So long as he doesn't end up with Sophie - she's way out of his league. I read somewhere that after Mike Baldwin left - of his own free will - the Corrie bosses asked the other pensionable actors if any of them wanted to retire too. They all said no, even Vera Duckworth, who apparently has to have some sort of breathing apparatus on set for between takes because of her emphysema.

I suspect we'll see a sad Vera death not long off, with Jack realising that he did love her, sadness all round, and moving to Blackpool.
Betty will just fade away, because nobody is that close to her that her leaving would create any drama. Poor Betty.
I want Rita to go out with a melodramatic bang, like a post office robbery.
Emily should go in a Helen Daniels style.
Blanche will live forever.

I understand the writers have a happy-ever-after style storyline lined up for Jack & Vera should the actors decide they want to leave.. Mind you, I would imagine Vera dying on screen, and Jack mourning would be incredibly sad and poignant. A

If they got rid of the older actors it would be like Hollyoaks. For shame! The beauty of Coronation Street is that it has an enormous cast of knackered variety actors mugging away in the background of the Rover's.
Coronation Street at its best has always been a character rather than plot-driven soap. Plot soaps tend towards sensationalism and the phenomenon of diminished returns (here's looking at you Brookie and Eastenders). It's all about Ena Sharples and Minnie Cauldwell skriking in the snug; Raquel and Bet drunk after-hours on day-glo cocktails; Norris, Emily and Blanche playing dominos...

She moved to the same retirement complex as Percy because the actress who played her was very ill and couldn't work anymore. She died shortly afterwards.

I imagine it's a rite of passage for all new producers looking to make their mark that they suggest axing Emily/Rita/Ken, only to be met with rolled eyes and embarrassed silence.
I agree that keeping the old biddies around to be old biddies is a great part of Corrie's appeal. Especially since many of the old biddies were formerly young flighty things (well, just young in Emily's case) - it's sort of nice to still be seeing people who've aged and matured as you watched. And Corrie's version of old people is a lot more realistic than Stenders' sprightly, never ending drama pensioners.

I'm not sure there's ever been a point to Betty Turpin other than being there as resident "maker of hot-pot". Her last sniff of a decent story line was probably around 1972 or something. I'm sure Barbra Knox vainly views herself these day as the 'grand old lady of the street' dispensing advice and offering a sympathetic ear to the resident young' uns. Her scenes with Norris are tolerable, but only because of his input, he works as a 'double act' better with Emily (who I'm happy stays for the time being). Rita, Ken and the Duckworths only stay there and probably refuse to retire as its the only life they know. I'd like to see those 3 leave and Mavis, Phyllis and Percy come back. Percy and Blanche on screen together, what a tour-de-force that would be!

Wow, I've sparked a heated debate, in a non-Mrs Merton way.
The only oldie I'd cull is Rita. All the others are ace.

Unfortunately Phyllis and Percy are, to my knowledge, both dead. Percy and Blanche would be a hate-off too far as a double-act though.
Betty had a couple of nice storylines a few years ago. Bear in mind that she is VERY VERY old so giving her a story of her own could be risky.

Was it Betty who had the sick dog/cat/rabbit/tapeworm that Sean kept taking to the hunky vet so he could make googly eyes at him, or am I thinking of someone else? That was sort of a storyline even if it wasn't really hers. I wouldn't want the older characters to leave Corrie. I think it's a nice touch that most other soaps forget, to just have other residents who don't all go around raping each other and getting pregnant, but who do like to sit with a dry sherry in the pub and gossip with each other.

In real life old people don't have story lines do they..? Most can't even manage to get to the pub. And it's fair enough that they're still there, as they're hardly likely to move out of their terrace in a cobbled street until they really have to.
Yey for old people.

I'm sure Barbra Knox vainly views herself these day as the 'grand old lady of the street' dispensing advice and offering a sympathetic ear to the resident young' uns. There was a profile on Margi Clarke in Attitude recently and they mentioned her time in Corrie. There was a quote from Margi which went along the lines of "The whole cast were lovely...except for Barbara Knox... She used to look at me like she was the Ajax and I was the shit"
