Is it mean to speculate on which soap child will be the next to go on holiday and come back with a different head? My money would be on Ben Mitchell from EastEnders. Chesney. He's lost the cuteness that won him so many awards but isn't going to be approaching the attractiveness that you need to be a teen in soapland. As long as they don't change Sophie again. The one they have now is perfect. I can't see Chesney being changed in the same way that the others (Nick, David, Sarah, Tracy, Rosie, Sophie etc) were, as the original kids who played them were just the children who had played them from birth despite not actually being able to act. Sam Aston who plays Chesney is a proper talented little comedy actor. It's more likely that Bethany will be the next Corrie make-over kid as she's probably the oldest child in it who isn't a proper actor.

Surely one of the most amateurish actor swaps was when Cheryl (Lou's former wife who went psycho after being kidnapped) fell ill and was replaced by a significantly shorter actress with bigger hair and a whiny voice. She was replaced by Doreen from Prisoner Cell Block H, minus the teddy. What made this unusual for soap swaps is that is was only a temporary one, with the original Cheryl returning. Can anybody remind me how long it lasted for? I was only a nipper at the time. The only thing I remember out it was being really angry about my favourite character being an imposter.

I think it was only for a few weeks, during some rubbish storyline where he geek son Brett was having 'issues' with his mother treating him like a child when he was almost an adult, and he went off to Africa with Susan Kennedy. I remember one scene being particularly crap when in Africa, as he was having an argument with her in his head and then an image of Cheryl's face appeared in the sunset yet it was proper Cheryl and not Dorren Anderson from Cell Block H Cheryl who was the Cheryl that was in previous scenes of that episode!

Was Cheryl kidnapped in South America when this happened or is that a figment of my warped imagination?

Wasn't Ailsa in Home and Away replaced for a few weeks in the same fashion? Obviously this was before Bobby came back through the fridge door.

Cheryl and a busload of tourists were help hostage somewhere exotic for a while, and when she came back it emerged she'd had an affair with somebody else on the coach and was now pregnant with Lolly. It was Original Cheryl and didn't happen at the time of the temporary swap though. I think.

They couldn't recast Joe Scully because of the ongoing legal battle.
I remember the first episode of the new/temp Cheryl featuring her answering the door and saying 'I'm Cheryl Stark' - thank God, i thought, cos I didn't have a bloody clue who you are.

Wasn't Lolly already born by the time Cheryl was held hostage? She got up the duff quite early on in her relationship with Lou and it was her affair in captivity that ended it. Anyone else remember the other Janine Butchers? The first one didn't really do much, the second was a bit more talkative (I remember her, Sonia and Claire doing a performance of Eternal's Power of a Woman at some charity event in the community centre!) and then the third one was a right biatch and ended up being a murderer. She was horrible to Sonia as well which I always found odd considering their Eternal-singing past.

Joe Mangle/Mark Little has a certain sexiness I think, which Joe Scully most certainly does not. It's a shame they didn't replace Scully though, as his departure was completely not what his character would actually have done, and has led to the re-invention of Lynn. I loathe Lynn.

It was quite embarrassing watching her alongside Sonia and Claire who were both top little actresses. Actually, whatever happened to Claire? If Sarah Hills can have a post Stenders career, then she definitely deserved one.

I'm sure Lolly's not Lou's child though, but I might be wrong or might be forgetting another affair that Cheryl had. They changec Cheryle because the actress was ill and she in the middle of a big storlyine, so rather than re-write it all they got a replacement. The affair that produced Lolly was never mentioned or given any indication of onscreen until the father came looking for Lolly. She did have an affair while she was held hostage by terrorists (genius storyline!)

Dynasty did this a lot with the Carrington youngsters.
Al Corley (Steven) and Pamela Sue Martin (Fallon) quit, and were replaced by Jack Coleman and Emma Samms respectively. At least with Corley and Coleman, they made an effort to explain the recast (Steven was injured in an oil rig explosion somewhere in South East Asia and needed a face transplant) whereas with Fallon, the sassy, witty American Fallon was replaced by an insipid, brainless British Fallon (Emma Samms clutching her American accent nervously).
Gordon Thomson (Adam) was unavailable for the reunion movie so was replaced by Robin Sachs, while Catherine Oxenberg (Amanda) asked for too much money and was fired, being replaced by Karen Cellini. This recast was a disaster and the character was written out after a few episodes.
On Dallas, three different actresses played Jenna Wade, two actors played Digger Barnes while Donna Reed took over from Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss. Ellie while the latter was off sick. Then Bel Geddes returned to the part and Reed was fired.
Best ever head transplant on a soap? Surely it's Sons And Daughters.
Actress Rowena Wallace had tired of the role of resident bitch Patricia a.k.a Pat The Rat and quit, but the character was written back in six months later now played by Belinda Giblin with Patricia returning from Rio having had plastic surgery and now using the alias Alison Carr.
Then the producers had the bright idea of luring Rowena Wallace back to the show by having her play Pamela, the long-lost twin sister of Patricia. Incredible because Pamela (Patricia before plastic surgery) and Alison (Patricia after plastic surgery) looked absolutely nothing alike.
