You know when old people say "they don't make music like they used to"? Well I'm one of those old people now and they really don't make music like this anymore. I'm referring to the lovely Liza Minnelli, in the days when she was an Oscar winning actress and superstar, rather than a celebrity who had Martine McMunching and Melanie C as bridesmaids. Don't Drop Bombs wasn't a hit when it was released but is one of the most camp and over the top videos I'm aware of. And it's fucking amazing. You can watch it !!!here!!! and vote for which incarnation of Liza you like the most. I look forward to the "results"! Ho ho.

I liked her when she fat and David Guest starved her.

It is difficult but in reality, it must be Red Leather Liza. I do like the Kylie-esque swooshing with the wind machine, and the cowgirl is pretty fine, but when it comes down to it, I think it's hard to beat a high kick from a bar stool. Dowdy Liza looks like Heidi.
PS _ That isn't David Gest, is it?

Well "... to break me cool and wreck me life" as Heidi might sing it is just too good. The "don't drop bombs ba-bee" bits are my favorite - haven't we all sang this in the car whilst paying little attention to the road. If I could sing this would totally be my karaoke song instead of Gina G.

Does anyone know if they ever made a video for Liza's version of Twist In My Sobriety by Tanita Tikaram? It's is possibly one of the most bizarre cover versions EVAH.
In fact, Results (the album that Don't Drop Bombs comes from) is studded with baffling but somehow brilliant covers. Love Pains, a Hazell Dean song covered by Liza Minnelli and produced by The Pet Shop Boys surely has to go down as the gayest thing committed to record since Liberace went to the piano bar in the sky. Then there's her version of the PSB's Rent, which makes mincemeat of the song's irony with the help of a full orchestra. It treads that very fine line between being very moving and utterly hilarious.
Can I vote for TV movie era Liza - complete with a bad corkscrew perm and 'concerned' mother's face?

There is no video for Twist. They didn't even make a video for Love Pains when it was released as the 4th single (and technically it's an Yvonne Elliman song, covered by both Liza and Hazell).
Rent was the reason Liza wanted to worked with Neil and Chris, as she loved the song so much, and her version as a Broadway showstopper makes perfect sense really, considering her background. The same was done with Tonight is Forever.

Thats reminded me! I'm going to see Liza in concert in 17 days time. I can't wait - we're expecting big things from this.
But more importantly, what does one wear when in the presence of a Minnelli?

Did you go? And what did you wear? I see her in a fortnight and have heard she's awful (which can only be good), forgot a lot of her words and just laughed instead. Outfit-wise I think it's a mistake to try and outdo the star, but as Liza mainly wears black it doesn't leave many options.
