I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to reiterate my X Factor posting and chat room blah:
Dolly for the judging panel of X Factor next year and...
if she didn't look the way she does, Dolly would be renowned as the best female songwriter in the world.
If you like songs that tell a story, required listening is Joshua, Coat of Many Colours, Jolene, Here You Come Again, Me and Little Andy, Halos and Horns amongst a million others!
I don't know if I'd say she's an acquired taste...just that she requires an open mind!

I've said it before on these boards but Baby I'm Burnin' is one of the best songs in the entire world. Such a shame no body seems to have ever hear it.

I saw her in concert earlier this year and she opened with Baby I'm Burning!! Was so fun!
Dollys music is great- Coat of Many Colours makes me cry sometimes (and I'm a bitter and cynical person)
She is such an amazing contradiction- physically she is fake but her songs are completely honest.
LOVE HER!!

Scissor Sisters used to open their shows with a disco mix of Baby I'm Burning, as seen on their first DVD.

OMG not just because of HRH Dolly but wow, Amy Sedaris is in it (she of Strangers with Candy). Thanks for this, I'm all wet and overcome.
*faints*
Have to agree with FeelsLikeSanta that Baby I'm Burnin' is fabulous. Here You Come Again also has to be in the Top 50 greatest EVAH songs

I've said it before on these boards but Baby I'm Burnin' is one of the best songs in the entire world. Such a shame no body seems to have ever hear it. I have three Dolly tracks on my ipod, and one of them is Baby I'm Burning. The others are 9 To 5 and, er, 9 To 5 (Extended Remix). I bloody love this new song, a side effect of watching the video roughly eight hundred times. Is Amy Sedaris the little woman with the chipmunk voice in Dolly's room, who asks her what her secret is before snatching a little fly from the air? The fly snatch is probably my favourite bit.

I'm quite glad of the Baby I'm Burnin' love shown on this thread. Seriously, I have spoken to people about how great it is and they've looked at me blankly and said they didn't realise she'd done anything other than 9 to 5 and Jolene! It's times like that that I wish I lived a good way down a rail road track in a little old rundown shack....

Any of her others I should investigate?

Dolly rules, as does Unlikely Angel (which I rewatched once again on Saturday). I'd love to see her live, but only crap seats are left for next year's tour.
Any idea when/where we can see the documentary?

Apple Jack and Why'd You Come In Here Looking Like That are good fun. Oh I love Apple Jack- again the bittersweet is never far away! Why'd ya.... has a few odd lyrics though- something about a bunny sack?

We've just bought tickets to see her at the O2 next year - woo!
There are still some decent seats available for the second night.

Dolly mimes? Aww! Doesn't she sing her entire concerts live then? I was in the 3rd row of her concert in Belfast this year and she CELARLY was miming to most of the uptempo songs- the ballads, i cant be sure of but i think they were mostly live. Was sorta dissapointed but I loved the show anyway- she's so cute and her little stories in between are lovely (even if you have heard the old jokes before...)

Anyone have any Dolly albums that they'd like to recommend? There are so many!

Break yourself in with a greatest hits, go for a couple of oldies like Coat of Many Colours and Here You Come Again(If only for Two Doors Down!!!) and then if you like it, try her most amazing bluegrass album Halos And Horns.
Just my suggestions!

A Dolly Greatest Hits CD I bought off play.com (£1.99 in their sale no less), arrived today. Its full of great songs. Harper Vallet PTA is my initial favourite, the lyrics are amazing....
HARPER VALLEY PTA
I wanna tell you all a story 'bout a Harper Valley widowed wife Who had a teenage daughter who attended Harper Valley Jr. High Well her daughter came home one afternoon and didn't even stop to play And she said, "Mom, I got a note here from the Harper Valley P. T. A."
Well the note said: "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearin' your dresses way too high. It's reported you've been drinkin' and a-runnin' 'round with men and goin' wild. And we don't believe you oughta be a-bringin' up your little girl this way." And it was signed by the Secretary, Harper Valley P. T. A.
Well it happened that the P. T. A. was gonna meet that very afternoon And they were sure surprised when Mrs. Johnson wore her miniskirt into the room And as she walked up to the blackboard I can still recall the words she had to say She said, "I'd like to address this meeting of the Harper Valley P. T. A.
Well there's Bobby Taylor sittin' there and seven times he's asked me for a date. And Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away. And Mr. Baker can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town And shouldn't Widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down
Well Mr. Harper couldn't be here 'cause he stayed too long at Kelly's bar again And if you'll smell Shirley Thompson's breath you'll find she's had a little nip of gin And then you have the nerve to tell me you think that as a mother i'm not fit Well this is just a little Peyton Place and you're all Harper Valley hypocrites"
No, I wouldn't put you on because it really did, it happened just this way
The day my mama socked it to the Harper Valley P. T. A. The day my mama socked it to the Harper Valley P. T. A.

Having not used Play in years, within about thirty seconds of opening this thread I just bought that CD pretty much instantly: searched for Dolly, remembered my password, my card details and delivery address were stored.
YAY
