Standing next to Terry in a floor length sequin lime green outfit will top the evening for me. Amazing. Is it too much to hope she does the full Katie Boyle and gets cut out of her knickers? And a yes to Claudia means a no to Fearne! Hooray! I want Hattie Tavernier to win, because she's Hattie Tavernier, but I accept that this may not be the way to win over the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. EastEnders never really took off over there. Any word on who the judges are? I'm hoping they'll bring Mel Giedroyc and her pill box hat back from last year, but I'll bet it's just Barrowman and Myleene again.

That wasn't actually me who said that. But those words could very well apply to me.

From what I'm reading, the songwriters involved have fairly ok pop pedigree (they're not Xenomania, mind). So hopefully the songs will stand up - and, with the potential exception of Rob the Builder*, all the performers are fairly solid singers, so that's all good so far.
* EDIT: ok, and CleaLuvShy

Serbia has postponed Beovizija 2008, its national finals, due to the situation in Kosovo...
Glib comment of the day: perhaps Claudia should be brushing up on her French skills, just in case.

I want Simona to win, regardless of the song. I wholeheartedly agree. Plus, there's an outside hope that some of the eastern bloc might actually vote for her.

Glib comment of the day: perhaps Claudia should be brushing up on her French skills, just in case. Is there any chance that the Beeb will step in and offer to host it if Serbia can't? We have a brand new arena here in Liverpool (the MTV Europe awards are coming in the autumn!) and I am pinning my hopes on it being a Eurovision venue. It doesn't look like we'll ever win the rights fair and square again, but a last minute replacement will do me; I'm not choosy. EDIT: oh, and sympathies to Serbia for their imploding political situation as well, etc.

LoveShy are two members of Clea (from Popstars the Rivals), which means Revelations are the only non-reality TV talent show sensations (as far as I remember Michelle Gayle did something, maybe Reborn in the USA?).
I hope Simona is ace, I loved her in Maria.
Edit: I see Adrian beat me to the Clea link

It's slightly uncharitable to lump Michelle in with the various reality TV losers - she was a proper popstar in her own right long before that, and quite a good one at that.

Cardiff FM played Happy Just To Be With You last week, at my suggestion, and I'm disgusted to see today that the video isn't on YouTube. And neither is her take of The Whole Town's Laughing At Me, which she did on Reborn, which was just fantastic. Not as fantastic as Sonia's Greatest Love Of All, which was fantastic in a very different way. I'd still like Simone to win, just so she can win something.

Michelle is very wisely shoring up support in the most effective demographic in her arsenal.
G-A-Y, 29th February.

Yes, Michelle did Reborn In The USA, but that was a good while ago. That wasn't really reality TV, there wasn't a huge deal riding on it, and she was (and still is, dammit) a performer and popstar.
I'm reserving judgment on everyone until I've heard them sing live.

When is the Making Your Mind Up (or whatever they call it this year) show?

I feel I should offer further information on Michelle Gayle, just to balance the we love her/she is shit arguement.
She lost on The Games as well as Reborn, bringing her reality loss tally to two.
'Sweetness' was released fourteen years ago and 'Do You Know' was released eleven years ago.
She is a good singer and she isn't Daz Sampson but that's all I can think she has going for her - I will need more persuading from her supporters here before I back her.

When is the Making Your Mind Up (or whatever they call it this year) show? Le 1er mars, sur BBC One! It's called Eurovision: Your Decision this year. Full details on page one of this thread. The Games wasn't singing, so it doesn't count for anything in this context. And Reborn was a bit of fun. So it doesn't count for anything in this context. As long as the songs are strong enough, then it should be OK. I'm hoping Mel Giedroyc is on the judging panel.

Can I just clarify, I never said Michelle Gayle was rubbish. I like some of her singles and I loved Fresh'n'Fly. I was simply observing that most of the entrants had been on reality/talent shows. It wasn't even meant as a bad thing that they had!
So, what do we know of the 'other' group, the ones that didn't do talent shows? And what happened to the other half of Clea? I always thought the ginger one was OK (but no Nicola Roberts).

And Reborn was a bit of fun. Try telling that to Thereze Bazar. As Jamie K (edit: and Rad) said, as good as Michelle Gayle was/still is, the only exposure she's had in the last decade is competing in two tv reality shows, and the odd appearance on Loose Women. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and it's not like she's famous for sleeping with someone's husband or showing the world her vagina or having a dead relative, but it's something she's chosen to do in her career.

Having already earned today's obligatory smite for daring to have an opinion, I'll just point out that the original point of the discussion about Michelle Gayle was that she was being compared to the other entries in having appeared on a TV music talent show. The only show she did do was Reborn, which didn't have the same type of aim as the other shows did. This is all.

What the fuck is wrong with youtube people? 'Sweetness' isn't on there either. I was trying to explain to my (Kiwi) flatmate who Michelle Gayle was and wanted to show how she had at least one awesome song.

Having already earned today's obligatory smite for daring to have an opinion I've not smited you for a while, but sometimes you can come across as very superior and self important to a point of being arrogant and dismissive, and not in a humourously arrogant or dismissive way. We're talking about Michelle Gayle/Hattie Tavernier and Eurovision - it's not Mensa. Just sayin'...

I've got the full Loveshy single and it's pretty pants. It has no Oooomph! IT IS NO 'DOWNLOAD IT' Anyway I've also been on Capital twice this week as their official Eurovision person, thanks to banging on about it all day at work. I think I'm going to be on tonight as well so listen to Lucio between 7 and 10 if you're in London to laugh at me. I have a bit of the website to make fun with as well, but it's not amazing yet. So what's everyone's verdicts on the tracks? I have only heard the full-length version of Loveshy's and the clips of all the others from the BBC website, so it's maybe too early to give a full verdict, but so far I don't love any of them....
Michelle Gayle's sounds the most promising and is the one that I hope is least well represented by the fairly repetitive clip on the site. Andy's isn't a ballad, which is what I would have expected, but having just heard it, I already remember nothing about it. I agree with David's comments re: LoveShy. It's OK, but just OK. I don't like Rob's much although he's a local lad so I have to support him, Simona's doesn't seem to suit her voice and The Revelations sounds really cheaply produced.
I'm very interested to hear all the songs live though, as maybe the full, live versions will work a lot better.
