The Archers is ledge. It all went a bit EastEnders last year - far too many affairs with women vicars and people shouting "and all the time you were carrying on with that... cow... man!", not nearly enough Hayley and Roy.
Tamsin was in it yesterday. She and her gay brother were trying to convince Brian to invest £1 million in a sure-fire disaster.

There was something very surreal about listening to characters on The Archers discussing the Nintendo Wii and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

I would also like to remind listeners that Kellie Bright, who is surely some kind of lowculture demi-god on account of having been in Bad Girls, The Upper Hand, T-Bag and Maid Marion, played Kate Aldridge for hundreds of years. Kate had a baby which she refused to give a name to until she developed a personality, and also enjoyed a teenage-girl-running-away-from-home storyline that could rival Sally's in Home and Away.

I did enjoy the portrayal of the builder/decorator chap last week. He smokes! He refuses to make his own tea! He objectifies women! He hasn't kicked a puppy yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

If you think the Hollyoaks thread on here is impenetrable to newcomers, have a look at the Archers messageboards on the BBC site - they've got commonly held nicknames for every character, and no FAQ that I can see. I got very confused. And then I got drawn into a very long debate about whether George is a spoilt little shit and while Nic was wrong to smack him it's not her fault that nobody taught the kid any discipline, and then I realised with horror what I was doing and made myself step away from the keyboard...

I did try those messageboards, when I was doing my research last year. Minefield, indeed.

The Archers is fabulously shit. Nic gives George a deserved slap on the leg and the next day it is all 'do you think Georgie will ever get over it?' and 'he's safe here now' as if Nic was Rose West or something. Madness!

Couldn't agree more. When Susan & Clarrie were talking about having to put him in his room because he could be so badly behaved, I was waiting for someone to say, 'perhaps we're making a bit too much of this', but no. It would appear that Nic is being pitched as the child abuser. Toddlers who grow up thinking they can go around pushing babies to the floor with no consequences don't end up very nice people. Just ask Jo Frost! Perhaps the naughty step would be more 2008, but until George is found in a Silent Night quilted divan I'm on Nic's side.

Me too. (This was not a popular opinion on the official boards, however - which may be at least partially because most of them seemed to hate Nic.) I was rolling my eyes when Will reacted to his guilt over the whole thing by buying George shitloads of presents for his conveniently-timed birthday. Yes, spoil the kid more while not addressing the actual problem, why don't you. (Though the fact that he was expressing some regret to Clarrie about how the situation unfolded makes me hope that it's not over.)
Technology question: does anyone else podcast the show, and are you finding the volume on the file ridiculously low at the moment? I've got my iPod volume set to its highest and I can still barely hear anything that's being said if I'm walking along the road or on the train.

I podcasted it for the first time yesterday and agree. I thought it was just my iPod.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Lilian yet. She's played by the only actress who can do a gin-soaked old good time girl, AND speak in perfect parentheses. Needless to say, she's best friends with her nephew Adam, the gay.
Of course Adam and Ian are the LEAST convincing gay couple in the world evah. Even the Eastenders lipstick lesbians of the early 90s were mirrors to real life compared to that dreary pair who, one hilarious storyline about being crap at decorating aside, seem to spend their lives having earnest conversations about polytunnels. I lost patience with them entirely about three weeks ago when it occurred to me that neither Adam nor Ian sounded like they could ever enjoy rimming.
I also used to hate Debbie Aldridge (who is, to be fair, a spoilt and whining little madam) until I found out she was played by Tamsin Grieg. Also, Brenda is played by Lucy Davis of The Office fame.

The recent Adam and Debbie inheritance storyline is another occasion (like Nic smacking George) where I have sympathised with the character I imagine the storywriters intend me not to. They both behaved like brats, expecting their dues (when nobody should really expect any inheritance as a matter of course) and demanding that Ruari the innocent mistake be written out. I'm certain the listen was supposed to be on their side but I was willing Brian to write the greedy pair out of his will altogether.

According to the BBC Archers website, Brenda is played by Amy Schindler and Hayley is now played by Lorraine Coady. I think it was Hayley that Lucy Davis used to play.

Sod Hollyoaks, Pat owning the defence counsel in yesterday's episode was my soap highlight of the year. Just out of curiosity, though: is it in the soap rulebook that the defence barrister in a rape trial must always be a really superior-sounding woman?

Was just going to post about Pat. I whooped and it made me finally get out of bed on Sunday!
As they said in the script, legalists tend to get a woman defending the rapist to make it more convincing - if a woman can believe him etc - and I guess the fact that they all sound superior is down to them having to, to a certain extent. You aint gonna get far as a defence barrister if you're self-effacing.

So...no excitement over the outcome of the trial, then? I must admit, it was all I could do not to have an extremely loud reaction to the verdict in the middle of a crowded tube.

I was pleased and relieved for Cathy, but I sense an appeal on the horizon, I just thought it was too easy in the end. I think Taylor could be another Clive Horrobin.

Ambridge Extra has its moments, but it hasn't had any of them in the current run - it's been exceedingly dreary. I hated all the stuff with Clive and Tracey and whatserface who hasn't been heard from since, and I didn't give a toss about all that far-fetched stuff about Bob Pullen's secret daughter, and I can't imagine Alan's vicar friend is going to be all that thrilling either.
As far as the actual Archers go, when is Tom's business going to implode? Can it be soon, please, because I really, REALLY hate him. And when is Ian going to find out Adam cheated on him? And can we get rid of both of them and have Pawel back permanently instead? I liked him.

I think they are threading the end of the Tom/Brenda relationship at the moment, with her getting broody and him only interested in his sausage.
As for Ian and Adam, well I find Ian to be a total bore - not his fault but the scriptwriters only seem able to write him into stories that require him to do nothing but talk about feckin food. "Hello Pawel do you want to taste my shortbread" or "Hello Camilla, do you want to taste my shortbread".
I was hoping that Adam was going to change after his head knock but that was seemingly forgotten about** 2 weeks later after he was well enough to go back to work.
At the moment I'm interested in what secret that the new megadairy man has - does he really have a wife or will he be tupping Kirsty/Helen/Adam? Oh the drama!
** - see also John Junior, Rhaurdi and his new accent, Harry (what happened there? - one minute he's at the centre of every story and the next he's run off with his never before mentioned ex-boyfriend) and Peggy or was it Jill and her American internet friend.

Woop woop, so glad Lowculture is back, so I have somewhere to post about the Archers! The BBC boards are a little too scary for me, especially recently - there seem to be an alarming number of people on there who seem to think that Vicky being excited about Bethany's arrival is some sort of PC-gone-mad liberal propaganda.

Yeah, I saw that too, they're all complaining about how it's all been far too easy. When Vicky gave birth about two weeks ago. I'm fairly certain they've not even scratched the surface of this storyline yet.
In other news, my response to the badger-culling storyline is that I hope the badgers revolt en masse and plan a David Archer culling instead.
