Molly and Tyrone have made it go from creepy to poignant and sad. I'm having a cry now.

They put her in the back of an ordinary black car? They obviously weren't paying to hire a 'Private Ambulance'

Apparantly there is a bell tower next to Sinbad's kebab shop that rings out whenever a hearse pulls out of the street.
Paul looked a bit sexy when he was crying.

I just had a little tear at Jack going out onto the street, but I wanted full on "ohh god nooh" bawling like when Madge off neighbours died or Rose was left on the beach in Doctor Who. Molly is very good tonight.
So then... Betty next? She'll surely have to die in the Rovers since she's not got a house or family.
EDIT: No let's not have a Corrie OAP Death Sweepstake, before you even suggest it.

Cried like a bitch all through the second episode (Betty, Emily and Rita's reactions were a but low key but then old people are more attuned to death- they almost romanticise it!)

Paul sobbing onto Tyrone's shoulder was nice/'nice'.
I think they did that as well as they could have done, really.
Funeral soon!

In the first half of tonights second episode I thought Jack was going to turn into a necrophiliac, but then they turned it around with Tyrone and everyone and it was really sad by the end.
Did anyone else notice Paul's eyes as the car took Vera away? He was like a demented eagle eyed action man.

By the way, Nick is the person to thank/exalt for the front page, as it was his idea, but I doubt he would say so himself. PS this is my 2000th post. Never thought that momentous occasion would occur in a thread about a show I don't actually watch.

I was in tears all the way through the second half, and when Jack waved as the hearse as it left I let out a little sob.
I haven't bawled this much since Doctor Green popped off in ER.
Well done Coronation Street - could have done without all the Maria/Sean/Carla shit, but it was very well done.
I fully expect to be in tears during the funeral.
Right then...American Idol

She was sat in her chair, Jack went to the Rover's because he was thirsty. She scolded him and smiled. He went. He came back. She was DEAD in the chair. He did this weird hugging thing. Then in the second episode the director told him to stop, and he talked to her sadly, and then the family gathered round and cried, the paramedics came round and made up some shit about it being her heart (How would they know?) and Rita, Betty, Emily and Roy came to the door to nosey. Jack told them Vera was DEAD. They said O rly? and fucked off to the Rovers for a Brandy.
THE END.

Right then...American Idol I liked how the Duckworth scenes were all very mundane, very domestic. You see, I thought it would have been better if they'd just focused on Vera, with none of the other storylines which felt intrusive and a bit disrespectful. And with no disrespect to you coxy, but when you have their audience saying "right then, american idol", it's to be expected that the show could never focus on just the one storyline.

Right. Despite the fact that there were NO silent credits for Vera, this was dealt with beautifully. Bill Tarmey demonstrated why Coronation Street is head and shoulders above most other TV drama, let alone the other soaps.
Jack's reactions to discovering Vera, and the way he dealt with it were quite amazing. Totally understated, and really, what many people would do in that situation. My heart broke when he asked Molly not to call the ambulance because he wanted to 'keep the world at bay for a little while' (misquoted, I'm sure), and when the paramedics arrived, announcing her as 'Vera Duckworth, Mrs'.
There were many other moments too - Molly's shock and even disgust at the site of Vera's body, Tyrone and Paul clinging to each other like brothers, and the street's elder residents rallying round.
No histrionics, no bad acting. Just classic Corrie.

the street's elder residents rallying round. I liked how they mentioned a number of times that Vera hadn't been well of late. It felt very real, like the sort of weary and resigned news I've heard my grandparents speak of.

I don't know if Liz Dawn has won any of those honorary awards you get at the soap galas, but I hope she gets something. I was reading over at FMF that she chose the ending for her character, for Vera to die instead of simply moving away. Considering she is leaving the show due to ill health, it's so moving that she would go through this onscreen, that she cared enough about the character to do that.

Oooh that came across wrong didn't it (no disrespect taken).... What I meant was I was really crying by the end, but managed to compose myself after 15 minutes, realised it's a TV show and cheered up a bit. I would have liked if they had concentrated on Vera for the full hor, a la The Body episode from Buffy or the Dot and Ethel bit from Eastenders.

Seriously though. Other than the bits with Tyrone, Molly and Paul, and the bit when Jack was sat down just talking to her it wasn't very good.
And when Fizz just appeared next to Carla in the Rovers like a plump ginger herald of death I was apalled. It really was Lolcat standard.
I liked Vera. We have the plates at home we've named after her, and everytime I see a damaged tin I think back to her Bettabuys days, bashing corned beef into the side of the trolley so she could take it home for cheap. But as a much loved character I think she deserved a bit better.
