Am I the first to see this, then? Compared to other Pixar movies, it's disappointing (I'd put it above A Bug's Life and on a par with Cars), but compared to most other films, it's good. The animation is really good, but I think its main flaw is the rats. Seriously, I could never quite get over the whole rats in the kitchen thing, and I suspect lots of other people won't either. It was a bit too predictable, too, and there was a moment early on that was sooo Finding Nemo (though that may have been deliberate). It's also probaly not going to appeal that much to the kiddies, with its muted hues and not-that-kid-friendly themes (rats and cooking). That said, it's warm, it's funny, it's entertaining.. It's just... underwhelming. And I suspect it will underperform. Next year's Pixar movie looks like Short Circuit redux. Witness: www.apple.com/trailers/disney/walle/Still, Toy Story 3 is scheduled for 2009, isn't it?

I really enjoyed it, and even the cold hearted cynic I went with admitted it was fun.
I thought the animation was amazing, weirdly it somehow managed to be almost photo-realistic and very much like a cartoon. I can't explain very well.

I'm really disheartened that the promo feel the need to spell ratatouille as rat-a-too-ee.

I always thought it was pronounced rat-a-twee

The Brits tend to pronouce it rat-at-twee (not sure about the rest of Europe) but the Americans tend to pronounce it with the extra syllable.

I've always said Rat-a-too-ee. But then I'm a bit posh. We have to wait another week or two for this here in deepest darkest Wales. Sob. I'm very excited, we played with the dancing Rat in Woolies the other day for far too long.
The robotty pixar thing next year sounds a bit interesting. Aparently the first big chunk of it doesn't have any dialogue.

I'm seeing this at the weekend (with my inappropriate work crush) I didn't like Bugs Life or Cars, but I'll give this a try.

I've always said Rat-a-too-ee. But then I'm a bit posh. But ra-ta-too-ee sounds a bit like how it is spelt, whereas posh people's never pronounce anything like it is spelt. You're not posh at all! Common fraud.

Common fraud. You've got me there, I'm probably only posh in my own head. But once I did eat a Donner Kebab with a knife and fork. Proper posh folk would really say raah-tah-too-ee.

They'd probably say something like Aubergine de Provencal

What is Ratatouille? I don't think I've ever tried it, although I thought I knew how to pronounce before Pixar told me.

We saw this last night and I was really disappointed. The plot was muddled and dull, I didn't laugh once, nor did I care about any of the characters. I've seen all the Pixars except for Cars and this wasn't even on the same level. Boo hoo hoo.
I think my main problem was the fact that the story felt so contrived compared to all the others. For instance, until now the Pixar movies have been about characters living their normal lives and doing things because they had to (like the fish losing his son, or the Superheroes being a family and trying to save the world). This was just like "Hey! Let's have a rat cooking in a kitchen so we can make a film about it" and then they started making it up as they went along.
Flushed Away shall remain my CG Rat movie of choice (and that could have been better).

I really enjoyed it. The animation was lush
I laughed loads. Especially the bit with the static fur. Oh man, that killed me.

Five stars in Empire magazine? Number 84 in the imdb top 250? Why the fuck is this film winning so many accolades?
It was okay. I enjoyed it, and maybe would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been hyped beyond all good reason. The animation is beautiful, but most animation is beautiful these days. There were a couple of gentle laughs, no real drama, and the same sort of formula we see in all Pixar movies.
I wouldn't really criticise a film like this under usual circumstances - it does what it sets out to do, and it does that well and confidently. But I was expecting some sort of pinnacle of modern animation. I hate the word overrated, but I'm gonna say it anyway. This was hella overrated.
