Javier Bardem is the scariest man in the world and I think I may have to avoid EVER staying in a US motel.
This is definitely one of those films you need to go and see again (or read the imdb FAQs!) to completely understand - and even then they still leave some things open - but you should go just for some amazing performances and tension which makes you want to tear up your Ben and Jerry's carton into lots of little pieces.
It's much darker than other Coen films, but still some great funny stupid-american-kids moments in it. Kelly Macdonald is very sweet.

I thought that Josh Brolin was ace. I loved all the bits where he's just creeping around doing his hunter type thing. And I was really surprised to see Kelly MacDonald, I thought she'd disappeared down the dumper years ago, but she was rather good.

Despite all the award nominations and wins, I was still a bit surprised by just how good it was, although I'm judging everything against Atonement, and it didn't compare favourably there. Even though he's got a reputation for being a big quick with his fists, or possibly because of it, I find Josh Brolin incredibly sexy. He reminds me a bit of an adult movie star I've fond memories of, but the first scenes in his hat and Brokeback atire (but no belt!), he just looks so incrediably meaty. I really didn't want anything bad to happen to him. The scene where Tommy Lee turned up at the motel after the shooting, I didn't realise it was his body on the floor until he went to console Kelly McDonald, who was lovely, as per. I dozed off during the Tommy Lee Jones scene with the old man so hope I didn't miss anything too important And many thanks to SBaholic for recommending the IMDB FAQ - it really helped settle things in my mind. And finally, was anyone else slighly disturbed by the boy's nipples in the very final scene? I've not been so disturbed by a set of nipples since Naomi Watts took her top off in 21 Grams.

And many thanks to SBaholic for recommending the IMDB FAQ - it really helped settle things in my mind. Oh, you are very welcome. I think it's a new feature for imdb. It will certainly mean dechipering Asian horror movies will be much easier without having to trawl through the horror that is the imdb messageboards. And just to see what everyone thought: do we think Carla was shot at the end? I think she was, because when he played coin games with the lovely old shopkeeper at the beginning, the old man engaged with him and won the 'stakes', whereas Carla didn't engage in the game at all, so he had no reason to spare her.
Plus he is a callous psychopath.

I really didn't want anything bad to happen to him. Oh yes, he's remarkably hot in an olde world Man kind of way. I'm all for some Burt Reynolds style revivalism. He looked so cool when chatting with the poolside lady. Some chat about what happened and regarding SBaholic's last spoiler: I was so shocked and pissed off when Josh died. But I like how the film's point was that this is what happens - the good guys don't win.
Regarding SBaholic's spoiler question:
Yes I assumed he killed Kelly. He seemed to have a very rigid view of things - like he'd told Josh he was going to kill her, so he would and like you say she didn't even try to challenge him. Her resignation might have softened someone who wasn't a complete psychopath.

I loved it.
Javier Bardem would get it. Even with his lego man hair cut.

And just to see what everyone thought: Me and my boyfriend debated this. He thought he let her live, but I thought he killed her because a) he's a nutter and b) he was checking the soles of his boots when he came out of the house, which I assumed was to make sure there wasn't blood on them. It's such a great film, and so tense. I found myself flinching at the gun shots, just because I was so caught up in it.

Watched this over christmas and really enjoyed it. Shame I cant say the same for my Brother in law who figured it was somehow 'pointless and violent'. Ironicaly thats how I describe him. I saw the Hudsucker Proxy a few weeks back was supprised to see it done by the same people. What a range!
