Do we care? imdb.com/features/rto/2008/oscarsJuno made me feel all kinds of fuzzy inside, but it's not really an Oscar movie, is it? Maybe this is a good thing. Atonement very much is, and it failed me to move me.

I only care because i want the full ceremony so i can see all the pretty dresses. You'd best hope the WGA strike ends soon then. I'm thrilled for Atonement (although very disappointed that Joe Wright didn't get a best director nomination), and thrilled for Paul Thomas Anderson, Viggo Mortensen, The Happy Working Song from Enchanted and Sarah Polley as screenwriter all getting nominated. My favourite nomination is for Laura Linney though. I can't wait for The Savages, which along with Juno I have yet to see. And as great as Julie Christie is in Away From Her, I really, really, really want Marion Cotillard to win for La Vie en Rose.

I will be gutted if there is no ceremony because my highlight of February is buying celeb magazines and looking at all the dress porn.
I'm glad that Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen have been nominated as they are both great but have always seemed to be a bit under appreciated by the 'establishment'. However I will be amazed if anyone except Daniel Day-Lewis wins Best Actor. He's pretty much amazing in everything he's ever been in and all the pre-release hype is making his performance out to be the best thing EVAH.

I always mean to get round to seeing most of the films nominated in leading categories. Seeing as I haven't yet watched any of the Best Picture nominees besides Atonement, or any of the performances in the Best Actor/Actress categories bar those of Viggo Mortensen and Cate Blanchett, this could take a while.
Laura Linney is awesome - I haven't seen The Savages yet, but her first nomination for You Can Count On Me was definitely deserved.
In fairness, Johnny Depp has been nominated twice before, so I wouldn't say he's been totally overlooked. I think a trip to see Sweeney Todd this weekend is in order!

I predict Day Lewis will walk away with the best actor nod. He should have won it for Gangs Of New York, so this should be a good way to rectify it.
I hope Ellen Page doesn't win. I saw her on a discussion group recently and she seemed utterly humorless and pretentious. Like that Clay-mation kid from Sixth Sense, before he lost his mind to pot, bad hair and car issues.

I really hope there's a ceremony too, since it's my big event television moment of the year. This year's nominations don't really excite me too much though. Normally I've already seen a lot of the films or want to once they've been announced, but Atonement and perhaps Juno aside, all the others look most tedious. Also, Clooney can be gone.
I'm well happy about Saoirse Ronan getting a nod for Atonement, which I would love to win best picture. It really deserves the cinematography gong - as I've probably said before the shot of everyone standing outside the house waiting for Robbie to return is one of my favourite shots ever. And obviously the Dunkirk scene was a bit good. It seems that the Academy don't like Branjelina, doesn't it? Both were tipped for an acting nom.
Surf's Up had better do better than Ratatouille in the animation category.

Once again, the Oscars shortlist highlights how little I go to the cinema. I mean, practically never.

Once again, the Oscars shortlist highlights how little I go to the cinema. I mean, practically never. I'm so glad you said that! I was looking at the list and have seen NOTHING. I know most of them aren't out over here yet, but I've normally at least seen the animation category! But nope, NOTHING this year!

Is the Oscars not shown on "terrestrial" tv at all any more?

All I want to do is watch the Oscars, and fucking Sky have cut off Virgin access to Sky Premiere an hour in? Bastards.

The winners: clickVery glad the Bourne Ultimatum won so many technical awards. The editing in that film is unbelievably good, especially in the fight scenes and choreography. I'm not surprised about Ratatouille and Daniel Day Lewis. Much deserved winners indeed.

I'm just trying to catch up now with the dress-fest. I'm less offended by Tilda Swinton's bin bag than I am by the fact that she isn't wearing a scrap of make up and looks like she's just ran her fingers through her hair in lieu of styling. I stalked her once around Marks and Spencer's food hall and she looked more glamorous then.
I actually think Julie Christie's dress is pretty nice but it wasn't grand enough for the occassion. I think Coco Chanel said that you should always remove one accessory before leaving the house, Julie should have removed all of them. Otherwise, hair, bod and face were in amazing form.

i have only seen "No country for old men"- it had a great hour in there but the WORST final 20 mins of a movie ever.
completely overrated.
And nothing for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? Balls to the Oscars.

I'm quite happy with the outcome although like last year the best film and best director awards were given for previous work, not the film on show. It's good that so many films picked up awards, and not just one clean sweep.
I don't know if they showed this on Sky or E! but it's a quite amusing red carpet moment involving Ryan Seacrest, Laura Linney, Jennifer Garner and a very strange acting Gary Busey.

Tilda Swinton would have looked awesome if she had two sleeves.
Julie Christie - dress: yes; gloves: NO.
My beloved Jennifer Garner looked very old and broke the absolute cardinal rule of jewellery. Earrings OR necklace. Not both. She nearly got away with it, but still.

I read about this on GoFugYourself but seeing it was just fantastic. I now love Laura Linney even more than I already did, and I've gained a healthy respect for Jennifer Garner, even if she did marry Ben Affleck. To echo the GFY girls, how the hell did Gary Busey get an invite anyway? EDIT: on the frocks, am I the only one who thought Marion Cotillard looked fantastic in that dress? I don't care if it looked like fish scales, it was amazing. Renee Zellwegger though - seriously woman, find a new fucking red carpet pose that doesn't involve one hand on hip and a pout at the camera. We've all seen that episode of What Not To Wear with Sophie Raworth at the BAFTAs; we know what you're doing. How about looking less rehearsed?

To echo the GFY girls, how the hell did Gary Busey get an invite anyway? I don't think the Oscars are as exclusive as they'd like you to think they are. Antonio Sabato Jr was there. Oh, and I didn't like Marion Cotillard's dress because it looked like it was quilted, and quilting is the most horrendous fashion monstrosity to be dredged up and brought back into fashion in recent times.

Gary Busey is a member of the Academy - he was nominated years ago for playing Buddy Holly. I don't think Antonio has been nominated for an Oscar, but he has been nominated for a Soap Opera Digest award for Hottest Male Star. He was probably there as a plus one, of someone rich.

Is that the way it works? One nomination, and you're in for life?
You know, even as I typed this, the words SALLY KIRKLAND flashed through my brain, and I realised what I was saying.
BTW, did anyone see Faye Dunaway on Breakfast this morning? Is she turning into Margot Kidder? She actually looks worse than Joan Crawford now.

I am now lots and lots in love with Marion Cotillard. Ditto. I am going straight to Fopp tomorrow to buy the DVD. Her dress was great too. My pretty minor claim to fame is that I once got a kiss off Tilda Swinton's husband. How old is she anyway? She looked good, I thought.

I read today that Marion Cotillard and Guilliaume Canet are a couple, which made me feel lovely. I saw them together at the Baftas, but it just never occurred to me that they were a couple. They were very good together in Jeux D'enfants.
Any Marion fans must also check out A Very Long Engagement. I love Tina Lombardi so much, I plan to name my first cat after her.
And in a slight Oscar connection, her next big role is in Nine, the musical, alongside fellow winner Javier Bardem.
