Was just about to say the same thing.
I think 'nu-Bond' doesn't DO theme tunes. After all, there wasn't one for Casino Royale, was there?

[Bond Geek Hat]
It doesn't roll off the tongue - but it does fit into the context of the film. Within the short story, the "quantum of solace" is the calculation of how much cruelty and suffering a person will take before their human feelings run dry. In the story Phillip Masters continues to love his wife even though she takes advantage of him and humiliates him, until finally he runs dry of humanity and begins to treat Rhoda just as appallingly.
If you think of this in terms of Casino Royale's "arc", where Bond has exposed his human side, only to be betrayed by the one he loved, it actually makes sense. The idea that he has now closed himself off to emotions fits in with Vesper's cruelty.
[/Bond Geek Hat]
I agree about the theme, though I'm sure the Bass would still have a crack at it. "Quan-tum of Sol-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-CCCCCCCCCCCEEEEE!!!!!!".

ooh there was and it was brilliant and underrated - it was sang by soundgarden's frontman chris cornell and I like to listen to it while getting ready to go out cos i feel all tough and spy-like - was called 'you know my name' Yea I thought it was good too. And yea the songs these days don't have the title of the film in, which is fair enough in my opinion. I think the title is OK.

Oh, well that song completely passed me by, sorry. Guess they didn't plug it much. Still, not having it called Casino Royale was a total cop-out.

Rather than a cop-out, it was another break from the previous style of Bond film and fitted Daniel Craig's portrayal very well.

Goes to YouTube it.... Nope, never heard that song before.
I apreciate what you're saying, but I still think a song called Casino Royale would have been fabulous/tragic, and a song called Quantum of Solace would be rather hilarious, although the name does invoke images of 90s Enigma-style moody 'dance' music.

So is this new film based on a Bond book? They're only taking the title from a short story that was part of the For Your Eyes Only collection, published in 1960. The story's a very cold story about a collapsing marriage told to Bond third hand, so it's not exactly cinematic. I reckon they could mash a song out of Quantum of Solace, if they really tried - it's not as bad as The Living Daylights or Tomorrow Never Dies, anyway.

It sounds dark and moody so should match the divine Mr Craig's portrayal very well.
Chris Cornell's song didn't appear on the soundtrack for some reason so maybe that's got something to do with it not appearing massively popular (although I thought it worked v well). It would take a lot to be as bad as Madonna's effort.

The Chris Cornell song not being on the soundtrack was something to do with the soundtrack being released on a different label than Cornell is with, I think.

As it is one of my ambitions to write a James Bond theme song, I will volunteer myself for the task of writing "Quantum of Solace" to the relevant authorities.

If they have dancing girls with old fashioned clothes they can rhyme the title with 'Bodice'.

I remember when the title Licence Revoked was vetoed by the US studio and changed to Licence To Kill since it was assumed that American audiences would not know what the term 'revoked' meant.

Was it not that US audiences regarded the term licence revoked to do with their driving licences?
Anyway, Gladys Knight's song would have been shit with that title:
Had my licence revoked and you know I'm going straight for your heart.
See.
I loved the Chris Cornell song. It's one of my fave Bond themes. And to ther person who didn't know it existed - it was a Top 7 smash at the time making it one of the more successful Bond themes of late.
I am looking forward to the new film. Daniel Craig is spunkalicious.

They should clearly go "The Spy Who Loved Me" route and have the title in the verse as it builds to the chorus. Like the following. But less shit.
The martini of life bears a measure of comfort two quarts of bitters and three shots of pain but once you've consumed the suffering and hardship The quantum of solace remains
(la la la la)

But I've used up my life=matrini analogy by the end of the first verse. I've got nowhere else to go.

Up there with the shit new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in terms of rubbishy titles. I'm not bothered about the Indiana Jones one, they've always been ropey: "Temple Of Doom" anyone?

I love Temple of Doom. The implausible mountain descent, the creepy forest of bats, the army of evil children, the monkey brains, the bugs, the mine car chase, Short Round. It's brilliant.

But I've used up my life=matrini analogy by the end of the first verse. I've got nowhere else to go. You could follow on to a 'life that has been shaken, but not stirred' analogy. And then a 'life with an olive popped into it' analogy for the middle 8.

You see I've never drunk a martini so I don't know what they're actually comprised of (although I know they have vermouth in them, which just sounds rank). I'm sure I could keep making up bollocks for the verses, but the chorus is stumping me. It has to bear some relation to the cocktail motif, and also be consistent with the title of the song. And be catchy.
Writing Bond themes is harder than it looks.
