I'm quite disappointed in the news there's a to be a new Carry On movie. I know there's been talk of 'Carry On London' for the past few years (at one point with Danniella Westbrook as a young Barbara Winsor) but I had always hoped it was a media myth. Now the news claims we could have this in cinemas by the end of the year.
I remember going to see the tragically awful 'Carry On Columbus' at the cinema and people were walking out. I quite like a classic Carry On - Spying and Screaming are my favourites - but I like them because they're innocent and of their time. Plus it's the team of actors who make the movies. You laugh with them as well as at them.
Does anyone know who they've cast? I can't think of anyone suitable. Even if they went down the predictable line of people like David Walliams I can't see it working.
I remember watching 'Carry on Columbus' on the special Center Parcs film channel in the little Center Parcs holiday house we stayed in when we went to Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest in the summer of 1995. It also had its own Centre Parcs version of Teletext that told you when bits of Sherwood Forest were on fire, which facilities were out of bounds while the nearby forest on fire and how long until the forest fire reached out holiday house and we should think about evacuating.
Over the course of that week I also remembering 'Anywhere' by Dubstar, 'Rough With The Smooth' by Shara Nelson and 'What Do I Do Now' by Sleeper on Radio One (probably the good old Evening Sessions) for the first time. All those singles came out quite early in the autumn.
Overall I would rate Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest in the summer of 1995 eight out of ten, which is quite good when you consider that I was 14 at the time and could usually find quite a lot wrong with most things. If I had to make it into a star rating as well, it would get FOUR STARS, and they would be green. (*****). The non-green black star is the elusive fifth star which Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest in the summer of 1995 did not quite get.
As far as Carry on London goes, the last I heard it was all about Shane Richie (*****) and Vinnie Jones (*****), unfortunately. I think Helen Fraser (*****) would be good in a decent Carry On but WHAT DO I KNOW, eh.
My favourite Carry On was Carry On Again Doctor, as far as I remember, but it was all a very long time ago and I don't remember very much at all apart it being about sex changes. I think. There was a hospital in it, anyway. Hilarious!
