I'm very late on this. I read about it in the Guardian before I saw it on here. I didn't read it but saw the headline about Classism against a traveller. I assumed it was a load of what-ho's like Max being mean to A Poor Person Possibly From North Of Bristol because he won his gap-year trip. How awful it is to be etc...
Clearly, I should've read on.
He really is cretinous.
My boyf has a few friends who've started uni this year after having a gap year out. Generally they're all right people. they went to Thailand, India etc... the usual places. But none of them seem to see it as 'finding themselves' or 'reaching out'. They bummed around South East Asia for a bit, smoked some weed, drank a lot and got really good tans. But they're pretty honest about it. They're not deluded like young Master Max. I think that's the difference...
If you're going to go on a year long holiday, great! But don't act like it's an act of courage, charity or bravery or some way of uniting the Eastern & Western cultures.
God knows, if my parents were rich enough, I'd've gone around South East Asia too.
