Facebook chat is evil. Mainly because facebook was a big enough distraction from revision anyway, without actually chatting to people on it as well. This is where the degree will go flying out the window.

Am I right with this: You'll only appear as online if you're signed into chat.
I was avoiding someone so had hidden my online status but just now I wanted to unhide it and I was looking in privacy to do so (where I'm sure it was before) and its gone. I looked in help and it says:
How do I set my Online Status privacy?
To let your confirmed Facebook friends know that you are online, click the Chat icon in the bottom right corner of your browser window when signed into Facebook and choose the "Go Online" option from the window that appears. You can click the "Go Offline" link at any time to no longer be visible to your friends and to stop receiving messages through Facebook Chat. This will also control your online status on your profile and on the Friends page 'Online Now' filter.
If I have this right then its a bit shit to be honest. I like seeing who's online but don't necessarily want to talk to them. And I'd rather showup as online but also have the option to be contactable by chat.

I'm on Page 5 of the members of Lowculture and have just realised that the photo makes me look like I'm doing a Jenny Celery impression.
(and yes I know it's a rubbish coat but that photo was taken in Dumbarton in October and I was cold)

If only I had known there was a Chinbint in my neck of the woods, I would have put on a beret and had a throwdown.
