God help us, they're doing a stage version of Rain Man at the Apollo Shaftesbury Avenue this autumn, starring Josh Hartnett in the Tom Cruise role. I may have to stalk him with a pair of tweezers, screaming "You're supposed to have two eyebrows! But you could be so pretty!"

Josh Hartnett as a West End Leading ManTM concerns me, given that in pretty much every film I've seen him in he's had all the charisma of a piece of cheesecloth. He might surprise, I suppose, but I sincerely doubt I'll be paying out to find out.
In other news, I'm going to see Avenue Q tonight. Again.

Ooh - let us know if the new Gary Coleman's any good.

You're making quite the assumption that I will be paying attention to anything besides Daniel Boys.
I kid, I kid.

Avenue Q update: the new Gary Coleman is very good. He's a little more subdued than the last guy, but I still like the way he plays the part. And he has a fantastic voice.
We had the understudies for Kate Monster and Brian last night. Kate's understudy was fantastic (although she did sing the same part of 'The Internet is For Porn' twice, but that's forgiveable) and Brian's understudy was great (and kind of hot).

A little more subdued might not be a bad thing. I liked Delroy Atkinson but he did come across as smug at times, and I know people who hated him. I wouldn't mind seeing the understudy Kate - Rebecca Lock's got a great voice but she can't seem to bring the puppets to life.
Gah. Somehow, I'm simultaneously thinking "I've clearly seen this show far too many times" and "Hmmm, it's about time I went again."

The weird thing for me is that both times I've seen Avenue Q, I've never felt that the actress playing Kate/Lucy really grabs my attention until she comes on as Lucy the Slut to do 'Special', and then after that she seems much more lively and engaging, even when switching back to Kate again. I don't know why that is, but I've seen videos on YouTube of Julie Atherton in the show and she didn't seem to have that problem. I wish I'd made a point of going to see the show when she was in it.
Oh, and nixxxon, you can never see this show too many times. I'm already trying to figure out how quickly I can justify going again. (Tip to people going to see it: the first time I booked directly through the theatre, and the second time I booked through lastminute.com. With lastminute.com, I had WAY better seats and I paid less money for them. Just FYI.)

It turns out a couple of my mates have been harboring crushes on Josh Hartnett, while I feel my weekday culture-consumption should extend a bit beyond E4 Hollyoaks. We have got cheap preview tickets for 23 Sep (via Lastminute.com if you want to try and get one). I'll report back, hopefully giving a non-biased opinion as I'm not a big lover/hater of either the film or JH.

One of the oddest theatrical experiences in a long while at Spamalot last night, now with Sanjeev Bhaskar as King Arthur. I am fairly sure most of the cast were pissed most of the way through - loads of corpsing, random ad libs (though not sure anyone who's seen the show fewer times than me would have noticed), missed entrances, and yet it was still brilliant.

Re Avenue Q, what's Mr Boys like? I managed to get the understudy when I went along (who was very good et al, but wasn't a Joseph).

I can't remember if there was a discussion on the old (new) board, but Sondheim's Company revival with Neil Patrick Harris, Patti LuPone and Christina Hendricks has finally been released on dvd. In the US.
I'm tempted to get a region 1. Most of the songs are on YouTube. (Not) Getting Married Today is simply fantastic.

I seem to be following you around the threads bigging up the Sheffield Crucible, but their Company last year with Daniel Evans was bloody amazing. Samantha Spiro was Amy, and she was great.
Patti Lupone doing Ladies Who Lunch must be worth the price of the DVD, I'm guessing, will have to see if that one's on Youtube.
I've watched the Raul Whatshisface version on Youtube too, the one where they all play their own instruments. I expected to love it, based on how complimentary Stephen Sondheim is about it in Finishing the Hat, but maybe because the Sheffield one was so fresh in my memory, I was a little underwhelmed. But I think you'd have to be really trying to do a subpar Company because the score is so great. (Although in Finishing the Hat, Sondheim claims someone did a production where Bobby kills himself at the end, which sounds dreadful.)

Continuing the Sondheim theme, I saw Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory last week, and loved it. It made me wonder why Mark Umbers has never been on my radar before - I could totally believe that he'd drive a girl to alcoholism over her unrequited love for him. (If anything he was maybe a bit too sympathetic, I came away asking if it was really that terrible that he decided he'd rather be a film producer than a composer. But Franklin Shepherd Inc was brilliantly done.)

Slightly theatre related, my auntie Torrence sent me a dvd of the 2011 Company production which is just marvellous.
And apparently there IS going to be a film version of Into The Woods, directed by Chicago's Rob Marshall with someone called Meryl Streep as the witch. I guess Glenn Close was busy with her tv show. Anna Kendrick will be Cinderella (I'd have preferred Anne Hathaway) and Bafta and Tony winner James Corden will be The Baker. No news yet on whether Gabourey Sidebe will play Red Riding Hood.

I keep forgetting to post that I saw Merrily We Roll Along a few weeks ago and thought it was marvellous, and like Pops was very taken with Mark Umbers. His trousers were so indecently tight they were captivating. I thought it was Ruthie Henshall sans make up playing his actress wife. I really enjoyed it but can't remember a single song from it, although one melody did sound exactly the same as Another Hundred People. Nicholas and I went to see Beautiful Thing which was enjoyable, and the country's most famous power lesbian Margo James was in the audience. Awful theatre though, one of the grottiest I've ever been to.
