She threw herself across about four people's laps last night, I think.
I'm actually still angry this morning about the show last night. That's how bad I thought it was. It feels a bit like if you've seen it before you're quite likely to be aghast at what they've done to it, and if you haven't you won't have a bloody clue what's going on because it doesn't actually make any sense any more.

I've spent a good proportion of the morning reading various messageboards with people reviewing it, and it seems like most people are of the same opinion, which reassures me somewhat.

I'm reminded of Carol Channing going to see the original 'Rent'. She rushed backstage to tell them: 'I couldn't hear a word anyone was saying, but I loved the energy!'

Interestingly, I've heard a lot of people saying how there were a lot of faults with the original in their defence of the new version. And while I think that's true, the problem seems to be that the new version has exacerbated them rather than fixing them.

Ruth Madoc is appearing in Annie in Sheffield soon (sadly not as Annie though). How's that for classy LC theatre?

And while I think that's true, the problem seems to be that the new version has exacerbated them rather than fixing them. I went to see this tonight. There were so many mis-steps - setting songs to Kylie backing tracks, audience participation, some really dodgy singing in the first half hour - I am also feeling a bit angry at what they've done. Denise (when she's not complimenting someone in the front row's tits) is great though and the guy who played Roger was frankly leagues ahead of everyone else

Heh. Sounds exactly the same as when Sparkle and I saw it, then! Apparently there are whispers of it getting a bit of a retooling before the official opening due to the negative responses to the previews...

Apparently there are whispers of it getting a bit of a retooling before the official opening due to the negative responses to the previews... I'm not sure when you saw it, but Angel's "wings of death" have already been given the boot, and Mark no longer takes his top off to reveal his abs. This is a good thing overall, but still a disappointment as he's rather fit. And Siobhan Donaghy - well she never stood a chance really. After thinking about it all morning, I'm actually now very pissed off with it all.

This is a good thing overall, but still a disappointment as he's rather fit. Yeah, they were both in it when I saw it. The Wings of Death scene was ridiculous - he looked like he was walking home from a rubbish night at G-A-Y, so I'm glad that's gone. And as for Mark removing his shirt - yes, he was fit, but by that point in the show I hated him so much that I wanted to jump up and down on his windpipe, so I never really got the full effect of it. Mark's not the sort of character who removes his shirt in public anyway - it was totally out of character. Just because you've cast some rock-abbed disco dolly doesn't mean you can throw the damn script out of the window. (Not still angry. Honest.)

I learned today I might be seeing Richard Fleeshman's knob!
Equus is coming to Edinburgh in a few months and as far as I know he's taken over from Daniel.
They do have a habit of using local 'stars' when a show hits Scotland though, but as this is usually Elaine C Smith I think we should be safe with this production. I can't actually think of anyone who could do the part. Maybe Joe McFadden. More likely we'd get someone from River City or the guy who advertises 'Hawkhead Carpets'!

Despite the latest !!!gimmick!!! I have absolutely no interest in seeing Rent. I disapprove of the way William Baker is flaunting Kylie like a dead relative on X Factor. He mentions her 10+ times in his Attitude interview, and that's not including the half a page of questions that are solely about her. I'm determined to see Hairspray on my visit to London, England, this week though, even if it means queuing at an ungodly hour for cheap tickets at the theatre.

It'll probably be that lad out of Monarch of the Glen. He's been out of work for a while as far as I'm aware (though he might be having an amazing career I just don't about) – so he'd probably be willing get his knob out at the Playhouse for a bit of cash.

Hmm. The early reviews for Rent: Amyl Nitrate Edition are not favourable. At all.

I was staying in London for the weekend with the editor of thecustard.tv (long story), and we went to see Avenue Q, (although he originally wanted to see something with Ralf Little in). Anyway, I loved Avenue Q. It may even be my favourite musical. Julie Atherton was great as Kate Monster and Lucy The Slut. She did both characters so well, and her singing was beautiful. I thought Jon Robyns was hot as well.

I got to see Hairspray on Wednesday (£25 tickets from the theatre from 10am each day) and was sat in the front row, and it was the most enjoyable theatre experience I've had, ever.
The casting is flawless, with the exception of Corny Collins who just isn't nearly good looking enough, and while Maybelle didn't look big enough to begin with (she's big in width but not height) her voice was amazing and made the hairs on my arms stand up. She's played by Johnnie Fiori who is a featured guest medium on Most Haunted, so the programme says.
Ben from Any Dream Will Do is very good, his singing is good but the dancing is excellent and he's very much the dreamboat (he has a fantastic arse and there's one scene where he wears flimsy gym shorts and touches his toes). And the girl who plays Penny is divine - she looks like a dowdy Louise Redknapp to begin with and is perfect. My favourite though was the woman who plays Penny's mother, the gym teacher and the prison warder.
Being in the front row and looking down on the orchestra there were times I was too close to see everything that was happening on the stage but to see everyone up close, and the sweat on their foreheads and the spit flying out of their mouths was priceless. And when there's 30-35 people dancing together you can feel the stage vibrate. The way they stage it is SO clever, especially I Can Hear The Bells and Welcome To The 60s. And the film's ending is quite different to the stage version which added too.
And during the standing ovation I'm convinced the black girl in front of me blew me a kiss (the advantage of being tall is you stand out in a crowd). She looked absolutely thrilled with the response from the audience which was rapturous.
I also saw Mary Poppins and reading back the earlier comments in this thread agree with all of those, and felt strangely emotional during the scenes with Jack! from House Of Idiot and Michael Barnes.
And for some highish culture I saw All About My Mother, Glengarry Glen Ross and Shadowlands. Shadowlands was the best, just flawless, and AAMM was very good although Mark Gatiss' Welsh accent irritated me.
I do love the theatre.

wtf from that article - Allen is soon to appear in a 1900s spin-off of BBC One medical drama Casualty.
The Londoner will play an East End gang member in Casualty 1907 - a three-part series following on from last December's pilot, Casualty 1906.

Oh I didn't know he was the guy from Atonement. Casualty 1907 is a genius idea. It can't be long until they finally commission Holby City: With Dinosaurs now they've started doing time changing spin offs.

That's reminded me of the back-in-time Eastenders when Ethel and Lou were girls during the war! They did it again with Pat and Mo, but it wasn't as good.
