Having just been told that nobody in my office is getting either a bonus or a payrise this year, and having a mortgage to pay and a poorly cat to support, I may soon be in the market for a new job. Does anyone have any careers advice for an unmotivated insurance technician who spends her days trawling Lowculture and buying sweets for the boys in the office?

Come to my office and buy me sweets.
Unless you're only doing it to lure me into sugar fueled sex, as it might not work.

They don't do mental health checks on candidates do they? If so I may be in trouble (see Skins thread...).

Being a scummy Recruitment Consultant myself I could offer advice for a few of the queries in this thread so feel free to PM me and I'll do my best. Perhaps in the style of Denise Robertston, Agony Aunt supremo.
Although the fact that this thread has been here for a year and I've ignored it in favour of Hollyoaks type endeavours (whilst at work) might possibly show me in a less than professional light....

I am waiting to hear about the job interview I went to before Easter.
I'm assuming I haven't got it, as it has been too long, but what with Easter and all, I have a smidgeon of hope, especially as I aced the "pop culture quiz" part of the interview.

I know this doesn't really count, but last night was my student paper elections and I really wanted the Music Editor position. There were only two candidates, myself and a girl in the year below me. The other girl gave the most terrible speech ever. "Vote for me because I like music and I like gigs and I'd really like it." It was just completely lacking in any kind of real substance or ideas and over in about thirty seconds.
I spoke for five minutes and made a dozen points about how the section could be improved, such as covering clubs, using photography effectively, working with the Uni Radio station, getting unsigned bands to be interviewed and reviewed, and generally get away from the stereoptype of three pages of gig reviews of The Hooisers and other generic indie tosh.
The girl won. I don't know if it was because my talk of "bringing the marginalised voices of unrepresented students to the mainstream" alienated people because I had ideas of actual change, or the fact that she brought a few more pals with her. And I'm slightly concerned at the possible cronyism - she sat on the current Music Editor's knee during the speeches.
I know that it's only a student rag, and that I'll still get to write which is probably more fun anyway, and that it's a stupid system (Would a real writer ever get selected because he or she brought pals to support them, or would it be based on legitimate merit?), but it doesn't stop me being so frustrated and disappointed about it.

That's rubbish! I would have voted for you.
Our student paper had a feature in the last edition about what used to be written about 50 years ago or so in it. A 7 year old would have managed the crossword!
Anyway back to jobs... I'm looking at a job at the moment, which I know I wouldn't get but I don't want to regret not going for it if someone at a similar level to me got it and I'm sat there thinking I could've done that. It's £10,000 more than I get now plus a free flat. I pretty much fit the person specification but I know I don't really have the confidence for it just yet, and there's a couple of things I wouldn't really want to do either. Its at the same place I work now. I might have a chat with my manager about it and maybe see what she says. I know she'll say I'm not ready for it (I'm not being negative here, she already said a while ago) but its showing willing to move up isnt it and I might be able to do some of the things a bit so when it comes up again I'll be ready. If nothing else comes up in the meantime that is.

Definitely go for it Becky, I've just accepted a job which is £8000 more than my old one even though they are aware I don't have all the necessary sklills they seem confident that I can develop them. So it's always worth giving it a go... Good luck.

I need some help with my job just now.
I love the job itself and really am quite good at it. The thing is the office where I work there no atmopshere, everyones rather 2 faced and backstabby theres about 4 people people in the whole office I'd say I actually get on with and I dread going in everyday plus half of the people I like are leaving.
I've not been in the past 3 days cause I just can't motivate myself to go in. When I even think about going in I get the biggest headache ever. Plus the pay is crap for the amount of hours and abuse we get.
Are these all signs just to hand in my notice and find somewhere else? Or should I just stick with it just now?
xx

I have a new job! I don't know why I'm telling you people who I barely know and who barely know me, but there you go; the wine and beer are probably an influence. But anyway, I have been offered a job somewhere else with better pay, better conditions, and where the office doesn't reek with the scent of hypocrisy and pure unadulterated evil. Well, perhaps. Anyway I am inordinately happy; now all I have to do is get through my month's notice without dancing a jig.

Well done jetsetwilly! I hope you enjoy yourself greatly.
In other news, I am currently enjoying the fact I am the lowest rank on my team and can thus leave at 5:30 on the dot every day without fear of it coming back to bite me in the arse. Unfortunately, this also means that the work is pretty darn easy - I like a challenge and I'm not getting one!

I have my final assessment for Transport for London's graduate scheme on the 25th. I have already SOMEHOW got through the online 'test', telephone interview, horrific 5 hour assessment day and now have a presentation and 1 hour interview to do to get the job. I would be really disappointed to lose out at this stage after all that!
Is there anybody, anybody at all that has tried to get a job with TfL, in particularly their 'grad scheme'? It's a bit of a long shot, but I really really want this job and if this falls through I am going to have to think of a new life plan.
Or any advice in general would be nice.
Thank you!

That sounds hideous. Seriously scarringly bad.
What's your presentation on? Are the questions going to be based on it?
