The double-page spread of Heath Ledger's body being taken out of his apartment is actually the last straw for me. I'm boycotting!

It wasn't far off.
I was surprised at quite how sickened and sad it made me feel. I am normally fairly hardened to scenes of media intrusion but all I could think was, my god his body's in there and one day his daughter is going to see all this. There was no sense of dignity. In my past career in social care I have been present at more deaths than I care to remember and treating the person with respect and dignity even after they'd gone was always paramount to me.

Heat magazine has been dead to me for at least five years. I loved it when it started out - it was incisive, informative, witty and clearly targeted at both sexes. Somewhere along the way it became a tawdry rag obsessed with minor 'celebrities' and how fat/skinny they are.
I'm not surprised at their insensitive coverage of Heath Ledger's death - they're probably giving a large cross-section of their readership exactly what it wants.

For me, it's the fact that loads of magazines covered Heath's death, but Heat was the ONLY ONE to put that picture in a double page spread. Don't get me wrong - they all printed it, but most had the (relative) decency to put it in a corner, very small.

A dead celeb is still fair game. These people rely on the media to promote their work and earn them money when they are alive, so the media will obviously want to get its money's worth for as long as possible. Yes, it is not pleasant to consider, but as consumers of this, we can't complain about the treatment of Heath Ledger one minute, then eagerly leaf through a magazine or website to see what Amy Winehouse has been up to now. This conversation really started when Diana died - over ten years on, and we still buy these magazines, so who are we to define the notion of 'going too far'?

The National Enquirer published a photo of River Phoenix in his coffin. And he was in really shabby condition since his parents were hippies who wanted to keep him 'natural'. Look it up on google!
The coverage of Heath's death is simply gossip overkill. It is being covered the exact same way every news event is covered these days with the rush for immediate news. When River died, the coverage was much more exploitive with the recordings of his little brother Leaf (later known as Joaquin) screaming to the 911 operator while he watched his brother die on a sidewalk playing over and over for months.
Heat should have been more creative and just changed the title of their magazine to Heat(h) for the week.

I have this debate with myself every Tuesday- to buy or not to buy? Yes it's bloody rubbish but yet something still draws me to it, almost like my subconcious is determined that I will open it up and it will have reformed to it's former glorious self. I boycotted it last year during the whole Summer and will do so again this year- as someone who doesn't watch Big Brother anymore, trying to buy Heat whilst it's on is a rather fruitless exercise. Still, it would be really nice if a decent, well thought out, aimed at both sexes, weekly entertainment magazine was published- except looking at the current climate, and how well Heat does, it would probably be shelved after a week.

Apparenlty the editor, Mark Frith has resigned or something. He's been celebrated for turning it from a unisex magazine into a "leading womans weekly" or something. Whatever.

Not only that, he's now going to "publish his insider revelations about the stars" in book form. I like how msn has "Mark Frith quits" as the headline, accompanied by a photo of the Beckhams.

In an attempt to redeem themselves, this weeks Heat feature an interview - and more importantly a topless photo of Gethin Jones.
Heat has been pissing me off more than usual recently with its interviews. They trail them on the front with strap lines that are either mis quotes of the interview or taken out of context. I really should stop buying it every week but its like some nasty rash I can't stop scratching....

Yeah, I have had similar experiences when I've picked it up and it's been stuff like "Cheryl: I'm leaving Ashley", leading you to believe Cheryl may have done an interview, yet when you look in the magazine it's her friend or the dreaded "a source close to...".
And that's why I read it in Sainsburys/Steal my sisters copy rather than buy my own
