All the reviews say it's good but every person I know that's read it says it's crap.
I'm reading it at the moment, and although I know a lot of the "facts" are bull, it's quite a good story. I mean, I don't think Dan Brown can write for toffee but it's still quite a good tale. It's the same with JK Rowling and Harry Potter.
I like all the stuff about Paganism and Christianity and the role of women.

It's not crap.
It is not considered very literary or credible because it is written for the masses i.e. very easy to read and narrates like a film.
However, so are most thrillers, and this doesn't stop it from being a great book. The story is very clever and intriguing. I would recommend it to anyone who reads books for pleasure!!!
Most well-respected literary novels are long and boring anyway.
It's bloody great. Everyone I know thinks the same, but maybe you move in more educated circles than me! Highly recommended.
The Others:
Angels & Demons: almost the same book, but if you've been to Rome it's even better.
Deception Point: interesting; a typical modern sci-fi thriller - could have been written by any of the famous thriller writers. Not great, but worth an easy read.
Digital Fortress - rubbish.

I finished it, and I really liked it
Angels and Demons does sound like it's exactly the same, I think I might like it because I know it came before The Da Vinci Code, I think if IT was the sequel I'd probably hate it... if that makes sense
And I don't think I'd like this Vetra woman he's talking about that's in Angels and Demons, because I like Sophie Neveu too much

I liked it. Not very well written or particularly groundbreaking, but it was a good book. And I never suspected who the baddie turned out to be!

When I think of Tom Hanks in my head I can totally imagine him being the perfect Robert Langdon, but then I see a picture of him and I realise he's too ugly

I thought the writing was awful, and I couldn't really get past it. Also, yeah the ideas were really good, but I didn;t think they were good enough to carry the book.

Its a good easy beach read. I liked it. Its interesting that Dan Browns major detractors are bitter authors who havent sold a few million copies. Its a damn sight better than that pile of shit "the line of beauty" which i bought off the back of the booker prize hype. Pompous fucking crap that turned out to be.

I was given all four of Dan Brown's books (The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, Deception Point and Digital Fortress) for my birthday last year and read them all in succession and with increasing hilarity.
The books are just rather mediocre airport/beach/train journey novels - The Da Vinci Code in particular is standard pulp that masks itself as something really deep and thought-provoking but it's anything but. The whole plot is basically just a couple of people running from one historical site to another solving word puzzles, spiced with supposedly scandalous revelations about Jesus.
The first three books are likeable enough page turners, Digital Fortress is unreadable. Brown is just such a formulaic writer with plot twists you can see coming whole chapters in advance - the dodgy guy turns to be one of the goodies, the nice guy is always the traitor etc.
As for the book's "theological" basis, I suppose it raises people's curiosity which can't be a bad thing. The film of The Da Vinci Code of course achieves the near impossible feat of being even more crass than the book.
Vastly overrated.

I read this on trust after being told it was 'fab'. Unfortunately it was anything but. Simply a re-hash of 'The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail' (no wonder the authors of that 'fiction' were upset).
Dreadful writing and, on occation, hilariously factually inaccurate; about simple things BTW not the 'Jesus' stuff.
Still I read it to the end and bought 'Angels & Demons' which turned out to be the same book coloured in differently. More fool me ...
