I have just bought the first edition of Buffy Season Eight comic, as written by Joss Whedon! Yes!
The story follows directly on from the end of Season Seven (funnily enough, given the title), and deals with the aftermath of creating 1800 (at the last count) new slayers. The episode of Angel where Angel and Spike go to Rome to try to save Buffy from The Immortal is dealt with succinctly in the space of a single speech bubble. And there is going to be a 3-issue Faith story soon, apparently.
I've never been "into" comics before, but I quite enjoyed this. Although I did get some withering looks in the comic shop. Perhaps it was the way I was dressed.

I'm glad someone else is reading it too! Despite dealing with government-people-who-know-of-magic which is dangerously close to Intiative territory it looks promising, especially with the lure of Amy's mysterious scarred boyfriend. Faith gets a four-issue arc from #6-9 I think plus Drew Goddard is writing #11-14. Geeker joy!

Is Anya still dead?

Yes. Although Joss Whedon has said not to rule out an appearance in some way or another.

I still haven't forgiven him for killing her off in such a pointless way, and not even a pointless way that shows how pointless pointless deaths are, just pointless!
Are the Angel crew in it? Actually don't tell me, I'll pick it up in the week.

If you do want to know: Angel and Spike might make an appearance but not for a while and it'll be brief as IDW Publishing own their comic rights.

From what I remember reading in SFX (...), I think Emma Caulfield asked Joss Whedon to kill Anya off in the last episode, hence the hacking.

From what I remember reading in SFX (...), I think Emma Caulfield asked Joss Whedon to kill Anya off in the last episode, hence the hacking. Yeah, I recall that too. But I wholeheartedly agree with Xenomaniac about it being pointless. Clearly, it was just killing Anya off for the sake of killing her off. I always wished they'd have had her lying there dying, building falling down around her, and D'Hoffryn pops up and offers her the chance to be a demon again - but she chooses to die as a human. Would have been the perfect way to see her off, if Emma Caulfield was set on having Anya die. Similarly outrageous was the killing-off of Amanda. Does Kennedy feature heavily in the comic? Or does she just blend in with the squillion other slayers?

I thought it was quite appropriate she should die. Anya/Anyanka had always evaded death in one way or the other, and had huge difficulty as a human comprehending the impact of death and what it means. As Andrew tells Xander, she died saving his (Andrew's) life, so you could say that, just for those few moments before she was killed, she finally understood what it was to be human.
Or something like that.
It would have been totally unrealistic (well, as far as realistic gets in the Buffyverse) to have every main character and every Potential survive the cataclysmic battle with the über-Vamps.
I think there's lots of things everyone would have liked to have seen in the final episode of Season 7, but when you've only got around 40 minutes per episode, it's hard to have everything you'd want and still do justice to each character.

I think Anya (or another popular supporting character) would've been killed anyway to bulk up the 'omgz people are dying' element. If the only fatalities were Potentials (plus Spike but everyone knew he'd survive anyway) then it wouldn't have had the same impact. I'm still pissed off at Xander losing an eye.
Kennedy is yet to appear. in fact, there's been no mention of her yet; Willow's been flying solo.

I do agree - whatever outcome Joss had come up with for each character, someone somewhere wouldn't have been happy with it. I just thought Anya's death seemed so meh, especially for a character who they had put so much development into over four years. I guess I'm less justified in resenting Amanda dying, as obviously a huge chunk of Potentials had to cark it, but it just seemed a shame to get rid of the lanky goofy one as opposed to one of the numerous ballsy girl-power ones. And suddenly I'm very conscious that I'm sitting here finding fault in what has to be one of the greatest TV show finales ever, so perhaps I'll just zip it. Kennedy is yet to appear. in fact, there's been no mention of her yet; Willow's been flying solo. Shame Kennedy hasn't made an appearance in the comic yet, she was such an interesting character. Methinks I'll hold off on purchasing for now.

This reminds me - I'm sure i'm due my twice-yearly "watch every Buffy from beginning to end" tradition very soon.
Becoming Parts 1 and 2 remains the best TV two-parter ever.

BUFFY, yes BUFFY has SEX with another SLAYER. A FEMALE SLAYER. I would very much like a film with this please. Perez Hilton sums it up nicely with "Buffy Eats Muffy".

That's the last straw for me really. Season eight has gone from jumping the shark to canonballing the shark into space. Having said that, I'm excited about the Fray crossover in the next arc.

A Buffy movie without Anya is a Buffy movie not worth watching.

Bought the second collected book in the series, the one with the Faith story. Excellent story, very well-written for saying the writer hadn't written for series before. He had a real feel for the characters. Best moment for me, oddly enough, wasn't anything to do with the Buffyverser at all. Spoilerised for those who'd rather stumble across it and grin a mad grin like I did ... in a single panel, set in England (as evidenced by the lovely traditional phone box, very subtle-like) ... are strolling ... The Doctor and Rose! I kid you not! Besides their clothes, they're easily identified because Tenth Doctor has a lovely little smile on his face that just screams TENNANT. So, yes, I had a little Whogasm as I flicked through and saw them there! There's also some explanation into the Dawn situation, which is nice

I didn't like That Panel. I like a sly reference but actually having those characters in it was too much. I didn't even like it when Cliff Richard kept slipping Scooby Doo and Freddy Prinze Jnr posters into the original series.
One day they'll get British dialogue, culture and references sorted. As much as I enjoyed No Future For You, the Prissy Countess Slayer was a rubbish anachronistic stock character. "Bloody 'ell! Arctic bleedin' Monkeys! Amy bloomin' Winehouse! Cor blimey, I could use a cup of tea! etc." It was worse than Spike in season two.

Vaughan (who is otherwise fantastic) does have previous where getting British slang horribly wrong is concerned. My favourite being a scene in Y: The Last Man where we're cheerfully told the word "cunt" is pretty inoffensive in England.

A giant robot Dawn? Buffy lezzing some more? Xander's girlfriend dying? Dracula being nice? Puh-leaze.
