My twins have a DS each, and a ps2. The ps2 is working rather erratically these days. It's their 10th birthday's in May, and one has asked for a wii. Various people have told me how crap they are, and that it's unlikely that they'll stay interested in them. They assume a ps3 is out of the question because of price. I was working on an assumption that the ps3 would be a better thing to buy because they can use all their ps2 games on it, but have now read online that there have been issues with some games not working. And yesterday Steven alerted me to the wonder that is wii fit, which looks like something all the family could use.
Argh, could do with your thoughts please.
Any wii'er's out there?

Get a Wii, it's the lowcultural choice. And probably the more responsible choice as a parent, because Nintendo games are all lovely and pure and will allow you kids to develop into polite and courteous homosexuals, whereas PS games are about shooting and stealing and seching and will turn them into knife wielding hoodies with ASBOs.

Definitely the wii. There are some really good multiplayer games for it, so you can all play together instead of just watching. I've had mine for nearly a year and I'm still not bored. My parents love it, and my brother does too even though he has an xBox 360. There's so much variety with what you can play on it, traditional games or point and click ones a bit like computer games. Plenty of games for children, where the PS3 is more geared towards older players. Granted, the PS3 has much better graphics, all the better for seeing the blood splatter out of dead people with, but the idea of the wii is just cartoon-like and fun, so you don't really notice. I'd definitely say the wii would be the best choice. If you're looking for games, Wii sports comes with the console. I'd say get the extra remote with Wii Play, Playground, and a multiplayer like Mario Party to start off. Should keep them going a while.

Various people have told me how crap they are, and that it's unlikely that they'll stay interested in them. I'm curious as to who told you that, just because everyone I know who has a Wii loves theirs. I think the distinction is largely what you'd prefer they did with their console - I gather PS3 is the "gamer's choice" because of the HD graphics and suchlike and the large back catalogue, whereas the Wii was designed at capturing the more casual user and console refuseniks, so while there are still lots of good games for it, they're less hardcore and gritty and generally RAH than the PS3 games. But you get more exercise playing on the Wii, even if you look like an absolute idiot while doing it. And you can download old NES/SNES/Mega Drive/Nintendo 64/Commodore 64/Neo Geo/Turbo GX games for it, which is cool, although possibly less exciting for your kids if they weren't alive to witness them the first time around.

My brother said that my 8 year old nephew just ignores theirs, and my brother doesn't think it's good for anything but a round of golf. My neighbour was initially all enthusiastic but says her daughter occasionally plays bowling on it but otherwise it's not much use. I think I'm going to go for it though, on the basis of the wii fit thing coming out as well, and that me and mr slsg could maybe have a heap of fun with it too, whereas we're unlikely to touch the ps3.

I am absolutely loving my Wii, but I am spending my time glancing longingly at GTA4 on the PS3. The problem with buying a wholesome family friendly console is sometimes you want to get dirty.
However, Super Mario Galaxy is easily one of the greatest games I have ever played, and worth the price of the Wii all on its own. I have never squeed so much over a game in my life.

Wiis are for kids. PS3s are for adults. Firstly because lots of PS3 games have characters who say "fuck" a lot before beheading someone with a rusty spoon, and secondly because grown adults quickly get tied of feeling like a tit waving a magic wand to get Mr Snookums the bunny to eat a cabbage about at 11pm on a tuesday evening. Also finding a Wii game that doesnt burn your retinas with primary colours is difficult.
As much as Id like to recomend the far superior PS3 - for Kids get a wii. PS3 is wasted on em.

You can now download a few proper new games online at the Wii Shop. One of them is called Lost Winds and its really brilliant (and only £7 or something like that).
It's properly blissful. Like a big comfy sofa rendered as a game.

That sounds rather lovely. I will investigate, thanks. (Though of course I didn't know that you could download any games!)

Talking of downloads, you have to get the Mii contest thing. People customise Miis (sometimes to a theme) and upload them. We were in hysterics the other night downloading Geordi La Forge, Darth Vader, V (for Vendetta) and Pat Butcher.
