While it's certainly entertaining, I'm also finding Bonekickers very frustrating. As other people have noted, it can't decide if it's a Bugs/Robin Hood-style, knowingly silly family show or a serious, adult drama about what might happen if a group of archaeologists stumbled upon a historically significant, contentious find and subsequently become embroiled in a media frenzy and/or ancient conspiracy. It offers glimpses that it could be properly good if it went down either of these routes, but switches style just as you've started to engage with it on the basis that it's something completely different. Personally, I think it could have been great as a drama stretching one, multi-layered story over a whole series and set within a more recognisable reality. The plot of either of the first two episodes could have been drawn out in this way. Either way, I would have hoped for enough character development at this stage so that I could remember what the main characters are called, but I am still to referring to them by the actors' names (apart from Tish Jones, who is still Tish Jones). I am clearly being way to analytical about a show which is obviously entertaining us all and does have moments of brilliance, intentional or not. "And risk loosing the archeology?!" was my favourite line last night. Adrian Lester must be wishing he'd stuck with the gritty realism of Hustle and Spooks. He's going to be in the Hustle movie! And the next series. When was he in Spooks?

I've just checked and he actually wasn't in Spooks - I seem to have made it up. Thanks for the info on Hustle - I'm pleased to here he'll be back.

I am enraptured. Hugh Bonneville's gravelly voice. Tish Jones' lectures on slavery. Evil nasty slave trading racist man. Julie Graham's permapout. It's fantastic. And I've learnt so much from it! It's edukashonal!
Best line: "OK bras off. All of you."

I just love that they're obviously used to writing for cops and seem to have forgotten that they're not any more. Half the time I get the impression they had to hastily replace key words in the script. "Open up! Police Archaeologists! We have to search the premises!" "Stand back! You'll disturb the crime scene archaeology!" "Bloody cops archaeologists! I hate you all!"
Obviously I also love the fact that every sentence spoken has an exclamation mark in it.

My favourite bit was at the beginning, when Magwitch asked her mother(?) if she recognised the sword in the picture. She had drawn a huge circle round it just so the audience could tell what a sword actually was.
Either that, or she suffers from Nadine Baggott syndrome and can't see a sword without circling it.

And lets not forget.. VIRGINIA CREEPER (which only grows in Virginia and not on every other bloody church on the south of England after all) growing in the shape of a SWORD... after 200 years... and it takes 2 seconds for an archaeologist to feel the plant and go "but look, this didn't get here naturally, this was planted" This programme is insane!

Best line: "OK bras off. All of you." I loved that bit - NO METAL WHEN WE'RE USING THE DETECTORS YOU BASTARDS. She said, wearing her pendant. And a watch. And Hugh Bonneville wearing his glasses.
I loved the sword drawing bit too. 'Does this crappy tarot card drawing of a man with a sword remind you of anything? Look at the shape of the sword!' Erm. It's a drawing. And it looks like a sword.
I like that we're getting some sort of story arc with the Quest For The Super Sharp Sword That Clearly Cut Off The Hands Of The Men On The Boat.

Aw, wasn't Bonekickers ace? I still miss it and my inappropriate crush on whatever the hell Hugh Bonneville's character was called.

I logged back in and found that I had a Bonekickers avatar. Proof enough of its genius, I feel.

If Bonekickers had been shown in the Merlin slot, I think it could have been a hit. Like 'Lillies', it was the wrong time, wrong night, wrong audience.

It would have needed a few extra cuts though, it was shockingly violent if I remember.

5 years on and I still cant believe they made a show where someone stole a corpse out of a coffin without anyone seeing or hearing whilst our entire team of heroes stood about 3ft away.

Well that's the sort of thing that happens when all the goodies are HAVING A SHARED FLASHBACK, like human beings can do.

I LOVED Bonekickers! So craptastic it was untrue!
'Don't mess with me – I'm an archaeologist!' That was my favourite line.
If Bonekickers had been shown in the Merlin slot, I think it could have been a hit. Like 'Lillies', it was the wrong time, wrong night, wrong audience. I'm guessing there would be at least two series if it had been there. *Sigh* 2008 was so good to us. Talking about Merlin, apparently a new show called Atlantis is going to take its place in the autumn. If it is as slashy as Merlin I'll love it.
