Thought we should have a new thread ready for next weekend. I've just been rewatching the last batch in preparation & totally cried like a baby at The Angels Take Manhatten. I've only just this minute realised Jenny is Stella's daughter, d'oh!

I've still Angels on my Sky+ box but I've never been able to watch it through again. *sniff*

I've only just this minute realised Jenny is Stella's daughter, d'oh! The sign of a good actor! I'm very excited about Clara. Jenna-Louise Coleman has been incredibly impressive so far. I know a few spoilers about this batch of episodes, from insider reports and seeing things on the streets of Cardiff for myself. I'm excited about the Diana Rigg episode and a particular costume used.

It's rare I cry at TV programmes, but I did with The Angels Take Manhattan. Amy tearfully saying "Raggedy Man, goodbye" and then vanishing caused me to well up a bit, but I was OK after that... until we got to the Doctor reading Amy's afterword, and "Tell her this is the story of Amelia Pond. And this is how it ends" then I cried properly.
Clara definitely shows a lot of promise. I love her already for her "It's smaller on the outside" line about the TARDIS.

Must rewatch Asylum and The Snowmen tomorrow...
I'm very excited about the new half-series and the 50th, even if I've gone a bit merch mad already and there are MONTHS of it left. And I've only bought a fraction of what you could get.

I also enjoyed Angels. Amy and Rory were the best New Who companions.
One thing I hated was that the majority was dedicated to Amy. There should have been more Rory.

I think Clara could become one of my favourite companions.

the world wide Web of Fear.
If only the BBC hadnt spoilt the identity of the villain by sticking him in the cast list on the offical site.

I was surprised by the main villain!
Loving Clara too. There was something about the episode that didn't quite hit the spot for me, but I'm not sure what - maybe it was just a bit too similar to other Who stories. I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I hoped.

Maybe this from the Independent is what you're thinking about, Ruth...
"[It] felt like a rehash of other things Steven Moffat has done. I kept seeing parallels and I am sure I am not alone in this. The text on the screen was pure Sherlock while the young man at the beginning of the episode talking to a screen was just like the Tenth Doctor’s chilling DVD Easter egg warning in Blink."
Personally, I loved it and as usual feel I have to watch it again to really understand it all and keep up!

I think I'll forgive him the MoffTropes (tm) since they allowed the story to rocket along and give more space to the Doctor and Clara. Also best ever example of how hacking actually works.

"I don't know where I am" reminded me of "Are you my mummy?". But is this a bad thing? It is a series, after all. It's good that the show has some familiar themes to build a story on.
I thought it was great. The screen practically sizzled. A brilliant introduction of a companion.

I also enjoyed Angels. Amy and Rory were the best New Who companions. One thing I hated was that the majority was dedicated to Amy. There should have been more Rory. Yeah, I agree that was a bit annoying. I liked both Amy and Rory, but I liked Rory much more. Which is why I was a bit surprised at just affected I was by Amy's departure, as I said it's very rare I get like that about TV at all. It was only after I thought about it later that I felt Rory got shortchanged. The "P.S" mini-episode of illustrations that was narrated by Arthur Darvill showing what happened to Brian, and ultimately what happened to Rory and Amy in their new lives was quite good though. It's a pity it wasn't properly filmed but I suppose it's better than nothing. On to the current series, I thought The Bells Of Saint John was a good episode, but I liked the chemistry between Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman a lot more than the actual plot. But I suppose the new Doctor/companion dynamic was what they were wanting to sell more than the plot of this one episode. My highlight of the episode was the "It's 1207" "I've got half past three" conversation between the Doctor and Clara.

I enjoyed last week's episode. Today's was more of a meh.
I like Clara, looks like she'll be a good companion.

Jenna Louise-Coleman is brilliant, isn't she? Just effortless.
Odd episode this week. Very The Beast Below. I couldn't get a handle on it - I liked the first twenty minutes or so, but then it lost me. I didn't think it was offensively bad, just not very good. A shame it was the second episode, really. Oddly, all of the second stories of Moffat's (half) seasons have been substandard (Beast Below, Curse of the Black Spot, Night Terrors, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, now this).

I initial thoughts were "meh" too. I'm going to watch it again later, as I think I missed something, it seemed full of plot holes. Why didn't the Doctor take the Tardis to the pyramid for a start? The Vigil were genuinely scary, not often I think that about something on telly, but were woefully underused.

It completely lost me in the middle and friends began to text me at that point saying how rubbish it was. But I nearly started to cry during Matt's big speech at the end and I did think Murray Gold's music was mostly a triumph. Bit of a curate's egg really.

I didn't think it was that bad, but then I wasn't expecting much of it from the previews. It just didn't seem like the sort of episode I like much, so in some ways I was pleasantly surprised. Again my favourite bit was a piece of dialogue between Clara and the Doctor (the "times got to be made of something, like jam's made of strawberries/"well time's not made of strawberries!" bit). Also it was mainly Clara and the ongoing story with her I liked than the plot of this particular episode. I agree with Ugly Netty that the Vigil were genuinely scary though.

I discovered all the new episodes are available on Virgin, so watched Turn Left when I was at my mother's last weekend, and came to the conclusion that I'm just not enjoying it all as much as when RTD was in charge.
It's not Matt Smith, or the companions, but the story arcs and stand alone episodes just aren't involving me as much. Maybe that's because of familiarity with the brand, or that they're focused more towards younger viewers who will be more accepting and less critical of flaws, but I feel like I'm falling out of love with it a bit.
Next week's looks a bit like the one with Michelle Collins and the muscly bloke from that Strictly Samia Ghadi was shacked up with before she sampled some Longchambon. I'm looking forward to the Diana Rigg episode, and the return of Jenny.

Thats quite possibly the worst ending to a Doctor Who story ever and I've seen The Deamons.
The monster feeds on stories and is beaten by a leaf, a LEAF!!!!!! because it represents the stories that have yet to happen and the stories that never happened. What a pile of nonsense, throwing a book at it would surely have done the same as it would represent all of the edits and other stories not written by the author.
....and Stalker Who in the precredits scene was just a tad creepy.

Not only that, but the whole Clara/leaf thing was the main publicity photo for the episode, so there was no suspense regarding how everything was going to be resolved. Talking something to death is a denouement we've seen too many times.
Regarding RTD's tenure, I miss it a bit too (especially Donna), but then I try and remind myself that it did all feel rather tired by the end (I didn't like any of the 'specials' - no, not even Waters of Mars. It still rankles that Journey's End wasn't Tennant's finale as it would have been perfect). We couldn't still have that, the show needed a change. The first Moffat season was great (and I *love* the look of the show since he took over), but I didn't like much of S6 at all. Of the six we had last year I liked most so it felt like a return to form, but it's the same issue that we had with the 'specials' year (or, indeed, most Christmas specials) - the longer you have to wait, the more pressure there is for it to be perfect, and when it (inevitably) isn't, there is a sense of disappointment.
Anyway, I'm pleased to see that the final ratings for the first episode have it as #1 for the day, ahead of The Voice and Ant & Dec (and it doesn't even include iPlayer viewings, unless watched through a TV).

Not only that, but the whole Clara/leaf thing was the main publicity photo for the episode Shame they didn't bother to make it the same leaf as the one she had last week.

Quoting for the hell of it here, but to me it felt like a RTD episode. Could easily have been Tennant doing all that shouting, and the communal singing felt like the sort of thing, like the power of belief generally, that was used to overcome badness in the earlier series...

Add me to the chorus of mehs. Felt so much like so many other Who episodes but less well done and not enough of anything interesting. Loving Clara though and I quite liked the whole Mos Eisley Cantina feeling in the marketplace. The Vigil were really good - much more should have been made of them.

Thought it was a mixed episode. The middle was good, reminded me of Alien.
As for the end, it was almost like the Ice Warrior popped out for a pint of milk. Somewhat underwhelmed.
