I've liked the Moffat/Smith era much, much more than the RTD/Tennant era myself.
It was a great finale, I liked how Clara's arc was resolved and River, Strax, Jenny and Vastra were used well. The finale was also showed examples of something which I've liked about this show generally since 2005, is that it is so skillful in going from funny to scary to exciting to sad quickly and easily without the shift in tone jarring.
I would prefer a return to a continuous series for series 8 though. I think the split series idea worked much better for series 6 than it did for series 7.

I'm obviously sad to see Matt go but I'm more annoyed the surprise has been ruined for everyone. I think it would have been great to have kept it a secret. And the announcement has all been done in such a stupid way, because of an idiotic mistake by a BBC employee.

Are you being deliberately naive here?
All of the other regenerational actors have been publicised before hand, and while it'd be lovely to have it as a surprise, it's just not going to be possible to keep the casting of the most iconic character on British TV a secret until the episodes are aired.
I've not read any stories as to how this was leaked but to blame it on one BBC person is idiotic. The mainstream media will get months and months of mileage out of the speculation, fed to them by the BBC, the Doctor Who fans will get their incredibly moist knickers in a twist and be desperate for sightings of RSC types around Cardiff and the casual viewer will maintain an interest which will translate into viewers for the Christmas episode. Everyone's a winner.

They did indeed have to release the news after one BBC Worldwide employee revealed it in an email. There is absolutely no way they wanted to release it now, before the 50th anniversary episode has gone out.

Also, they very much wanted to keep the regeneration of the Ninth Doctor a secret until transmission. But the press worked it out and that was that - although it wasn't exactly difficult, given some of the things Eccleston was saying in interviews to promote the launch of the show.

So was this BBC employee also responsible for The Sun story in March about MS leaving after the Christmas special?

So was this BBC employee also responsible for The Sun story in March about MS leaving after the Christmas special? No, that involved the Sun taking an educated guess and bring proved right

Exactly. And that story is why, in interviews, Matt said he was definitely filming the next series – to avoid spoiling 'the surprise'.
The next series wouldn't have started filming until next year, *after* the regeneration had been shown, thus denying all the DW fans their supposed pleasure of "spotting RSC types around Cardiff".
There is also something to be said for an audience having less of an investment in an actor they know is leaving. In any show, not just Doctor Who. Yes, it would gain viewers for the Christmas special, but it doesn't help the 50th much, as any publicity the cast do around it will feature on "What will the next Who be like?" and not "What's going to happen in the 50th?"

So The Sun guessing in March was a coincidence of Dierdre Chambers proportions, and had nothing whatsoever to do with his agent obviously being aware of his plans and dealing with queries on his availability, the BBC having to start casting and contractual talks with the new actor getting going, not to mention those involved in any productions Matt Smith has signed up for or is in discussion with after the Gosling film and Christmas special finish filming?
Kudos for him for keeping up the pretence and trying not to spoil it but lots of people would have known he was leaving (with more than a handful of gossipy media queens in that group I'll bet) and despite a strong desire for all involved to keep it quiet and not ruin the surprise the best selling newspaper in the country goes and reports something truthful, the bastards. If only Leveson was still running.
And while the new series won't film until the special has aired, won't the actor taking over the role need to film his regeneration scenes? Possibly on the set where it's filmed?

Regardless, the fact remains they didn't intend to announce it when they did and it *was* because of an email from one BBC employee.

And there's more likelihood of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ turning up to his birthday party in York Cathedral as there ever was of the regeneration being kept a secret until December 25th.

@privateeyenews: What a Doctor Who-ha! How Matt Smith's departure only leaked thanks to a BBC email cock-up. Full story in the new Eye.

I am much more upset about this than I was about Tennant. It's the first regeneration I've been upset about - was only very wee when T Baker and Davison regenerated and didn't watch it then - was perfectly happy with C Baker turning into McCoy and then McCoy and McGann were obviously going to turn into new incarnations given the time off-screen. Eccleston I was a bit upset about initially, although that was more frustration than sadness, given we heard he was going pretty much as he started. Whilst I knew I'd miss Tennant, it seemed as though he'd had a good run. And yet, Matt Smith has only had a couple fewer episodes than him, almost exactly the same length of tenure and he still seems so new. I think it may be that his companion refresh came 2.5 years in, whilst Tennant had one per year plus lots of one-off and occasional companions. I would have loved just one more series with Matt Smith - I think he may now be my favourite Doctor, and he seems so lovely in interviews.

I too think it doesn't feel like he's been the Doctor very long, for some reason. It's a shame he's going, but as long as they get someone good and it improves, then I'm not fussed. It would have been nice to have it as a complete surprise in his last episode though, with a shock regeneration.
I've not been that impressed with this lot of episodes really. The final was the best and I think I only really enjoyed 1 or 2 others. I do need to re-watch though.
I saw a headline somewhere that said bets had been stopped on who was going to be the next Doctor, as it was looking like Rory Kinnear had got the job. Not sure I can cope with watching someone who has fucked a pig. It was bad enough having seen Clara getting fingered on the stairs in Room at the Top between being announced and appearing on the show.

Anyone care to comment re the 12th Doctor? Or indeed the God awful programme which revealed him?
I quite enjoyed the commentary: The show was "less a casting announcement than a global product launch," said The Telegraph's Robert Colvile, "an exercise in brand-management equivalent to the unveiling of the latest iPhone".
The Independent referred to the "25 excruciating minutes of teasing involving a Doctor Who nostalgia fest presented by Zoe Ball, that played out like a segment of Live & Kicking".
In its live blog, The Guardian questioned the quality of guests: "Zoe is talking to Peter Davison (who was the Doctor once), the little boy from Outnumbered (because he went to visit a doctor once) and Liza Tarbuck (because her name has the letter C in it, and so does the word 'doctor')."

There are no words to sum up how much I loved that episode. Just love.
However, what the hell is going on with the after party thing? What have One Direction got to do with Dr Who? Why is Rick Edwards hosting it? The only good thing was when Matt Smith raised two fingers to One Direction when he thought the cameras weren't looking. I love that man.
