Nadia's wish was to be accepted as a woman. As long as the press refer to her as 'Portu-geezer' unfortunately she will never be fully accepted as female. Which is a disgrace. Shouldn't there be some sort of body that governs newspapers (like Ofcom does TV) to stop them refering to her in such a derogatory way? If they refered to Victor as 'N****r' there would be a public outcry so why are they allowed to get away with this?

Someone like Josh for example still would never win, as he's too sexually threatening for your typical British household. I saw Josh being out first time of asking down to a) being solely up against Helen Adams and b) being as boring as fuck, despite promising so much in his "vote me into the house" speech (though rumours suggest he was promised he would've made it into the house no matter what.)

to be honest, i didnt watch much of BB5 but I would say that i'm incredibly surprised that someone as "offbeat" as a transexual (and a foreign one at that) won in a country with such a high proportion of homophobes and xenophobes (outside PJ-World of course) like ours. Its an encouraging sign.

Woah...
Although Nadia and Brian aren't exactly the same, they are in the sense that they have something about them that is out of the ordinary. Not to say that homosexuality is not an ordinary thing, but it is still quite taboo in our society, as is transsexuality. For an openly gay man to win a popularity contest was brilliant. Even Will Young waited until he'd secured his place as winner of Pop Idol before coming out. Nadia winning as an openly transgendered person (albeit not to her housemates) was brilliant. We live in a society where homosexuality is mostly frowned upon and transsexuals are laughed at and regarded as freaks. For two people representing both to win a competition (albeit three years apart) where the winner is voted for by this pretty homophobic country is great.
Nadia's transsexuality played a part in her winning. No one can deny that. Brian's homosexuality had a part in his winning. Not solely because he likes men, but because he is stereotypically gay. If he wasn't the media image of a gay man (funny, fashionable, cute, but entirely asexual, almost as if they're only there to be funny, mince and go shopping with their female friends), would he have won? Maybe, but he wouldn't be the same person. But of course he didn't win purely because he is homosexual, otherwise Josh Rafter would have been runner-up. But then, Josh likes sex. He's not the type of gay that would skip to Miss Selfridge with his Heat magazine-loving friends. He's gay and he likes having sex with men. Remember, Brian was also open about being a virgin, which added to the asexual persona he had.
Nadia went into the house because she wanted to see if she could interact as a woman with a group of people who had no idea she was born a man. Her winning may have been predictable and her time in the house may have even been edited purposely so that she won, but her reaction was completely worth it. To see someone who did not play any sort of game or even expect to win triumph really tugged at the heart strings. I was in floods of tears to see her overwhelmed to point she couldn't even speak.
I do agree, though, that it is arguable whether she has been accepted as a woman or as a transgendered woman. But in a way, surely the latter is preferable? If she didn't reveal to Big Brother that was she was born a man before she got into the house and nobody knew (save for a bit of 'is she or isn't she?' banter - as Dan said, you can tell there's something a bit different about her) and still won and then said 'Oh, by the way, I am a transsexual' she would have succeeded in being accepted as a woman, but only because nobody knew she was otherwise. Am I making sense? Surely the fact that the public knew and still voted her as the winner is a good thing.
It doesn't really matter why she won. All that matters is that a transsexual has been voted as the most popular person out of 12(?) other 'ordinary' (for want of a better word) people. If people were shallow enough to vote for someone purely because they're a bit of a sore thumb in society, Victor would have won because he's black, Dan or Marco because they're gay or even Kitten because she's a lesbian. Not only was Nadia's win a triumph for transgendered people but it was a triumph for a wacky but not OTT, slightly crazy and bad tempered but not annoying woman who happened to have been born into the wrong body and just wanted acceptance. As I said, her tear-inducing reaction to winning was worth any amount of editing the producers may have done. I can't remember the last time I was so happy I was in tears for someone I've never met in person.
