Channel 4 will be forced to broadcast a series of apologies over Celebrity Big Brother after Ofcom ruled it contravened its broadcasting code.
Apologies will be shown at the beginning of the series launch episode of Big Brother next Wednesday, the following day's repeat and the first eviction show.
However, Channel 4 has escaped a fine.
Ofcom launched its investigation after 46,000 or more complaints were made over the Shilpa Shetty racism row in Celebrity Big Brother in January.
Complaints to both Channel 4 and Ofcom snowballed after contestants in the house, including Jade Goody, were involved in the alleged racist bullying of Bollywood star Shetty.
Additionally, Ofcom will force Channel 4 to publish transcripts of a series of previously-unheard and potentially-racist conversations that took place within the Celebrity Big Brother house.media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,,2086998,00.html I'm quite surprised actually - but intrigued to hear about the transcripts.

Oooh, and they're bringing back Right to Reply (essentially)!
11am: Channel 4 has accepted Ofcom's adjudication and will introduce a new Big Brother intervention policy, bring back a Right to Reply-type show, appoint a viewers' editor, and commission research on diversity in the UK. More follows ...
A Viewer's Editor? How very Guardian-like.

It reads like a piece of trendy fringe theatre, doesn't it?
Also, excellent job Jo for completely misunderstanding what Shilpa meant by "your claim to fame is this".

Could be worse an OZ BB contestant has not been told her dad has died. That'll be a fun eviction night.

They should get Susie Blake to do the apologies.

That transcript makes for really unpleasant reading. I can remember being so angry at that I wanted to scream and Channel Four seemed to be encouraging it by doing fuck all.

I don't get what Channel 4 did that was so wrong. Some ignorant people said some ignorant things on TV and millions watched and disagreed strongly.
What should Channel 4 apologise for? Broadcasting racist language? Hardly any was used and the backlash against the purpotrators made many people question what it means to be racist.
What exactly could Channel 4 do? Not show the full exent of Jack, Jade, Jo and others' idiocy? I'm glad they did and I'm glad that their careers are where they are because of it.

And now they've axed text voting and decided to only charge 25p for phone texts - with none of the profits going to C4.

I guess Channel 4 is the most obvious scapegoat, but why is no-one villifying Endemol for all this?
They're the ones with the editorial control. They're the ones who'll own all the rushes of all the footage we didn't see. They're the ones who chose to warn Jack and Jo in the Diary Room and apparently not disclose it to Channel 4.
I'm really intrigued as to what these on-air apologies are actually going to say. "It was regrettable that we did something that we can't actually put our finger on, and we wish to apologise for any upset caused by these things that we didn't actually do."

It was awful what happened to Shilpa and yeh they probably should've kicked them out of the house for what they said rather than a telling off/ warning but I'm glad they showed it so those hideous people can be exposed for what they really are. If they hadn't we might still be disillusioned into thinking Jade is just a bit dippy and funny (or whatever endeared people to Jade in the first place) when in fact she is a hateful racist bully. I'm glad people now know this.

I think I wrong in my earlier post. Channel 4 have been made to apologise and release those transcripts because they did not show the full exent of what Jade and co said. They were also reprimanded for their racist behaviour in secret. Ofcom ruled that Channel 4 mislead veiwers by broadcasting what they did and by badly handling the fall out.
The heat is lying chiefly with Channel 4 and not Edemol because Channel 4 is, as far as I understand it, a non-profit organisation held in trust by the government. I think it is meant to be commercially funded alternative to the BBC and is a bit of politcal 'issuse' on a good day, not least when some of its programming makes global news.

That offcom message was shit. If anyone was really that upset over it then I doubt they'll be tuning in to watch the first episode of the new series of the show that has pissed them off so much.

Paul's suggestion of Susie Blake proved to be the most exciting thing about the apology.
