....when radio programmers and listeners alike abandon any attempt at musical credibility and the airwaves gradually fill with the sound of sleighbells and children's choirs, as we hear all manner of serious artists kneel down at the high alter of cheese: The Christmas Song.
What's your favourite Christmas classic?

(Very shamefully) Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You (perfect pop)
And anyone singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
Even Vonda Shephard.

The Blessed Kirsty n' t'Pogues - Fairytale of New York.
Also have a soft spot for Boney M's 'Mary's Boy Child' too.

I concur on the Mariah song, I fucking love that. I also fucking love Fairytale of New York, and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. Then of course there is the mighty S Club's Perfect Christmas, and for pure comedy value the one that goes 'here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus Lane'. Cos that is stupid.
Christ (literally), I nearly forgot all those perfectly cheese ridden Cliff songs! I suppose I'm a bit of a Christmas song whore.

My favourite has always been 'Christmas Wrapping' by the Waitresses, (and NEVER the awful Spice Girls cover), although it's not actually that naff.
On the cheesier front, Mariah's one always gets me singing along, as does Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. For some reason the Pointer Sisters randomly shouting "I wanna...... Bicycle!" at the start of their cover of "Santa Claus is Coming To Town always makes me giggle".
and I secretly liked the cheeky girls one from last year

My favourite Xmas song is definitely Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"
2nd is The Pogues + Kirsty "Fairytale Of NY"
I also *heart* the following... Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Xmas Everyday The Waitresses - Xmas Wrapping (I do like the Spice Girls version equally though) Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody Madonna - Santa Baby Spice Girls - Sleigh Ride East 17 - Stay Another Day (it has freakin' SLEIGHBELLS!) John Lennon - War Is Over Bing Crosby - White Christmas

Oh, if we're counting songs released at Christmas, that include bells, but don't reference Christmas, then I would add Stop! by Erasure.

I've waited the whole year through Spring Summer and Autumn too Oh, but this is the season for me and you Am I crazy? To hope that you'll want me?
The lights on the Christmas tree Shine bright and I can't believe That I've waited to tell you on Christmas Eve How I love you And you're the gift that I long for
[Chorus] I love Christmas time When the bells ring in this heart of mine Just like Santa out on his sleigh tonight I love Christmas
Who knows what the future plans In this winter wonderland But with you by my side and your hand in my hand We can make it Whatever the weather
I love Christmas time When the bells ring in this heart of mine Just like Santa out on his sleigh tonight I love Christmas
Hey Santa let it snow With the season's hope and some mistletoe If we're arm in arm then the world will know I love Christmas
Gonna jump into Santa's sack Just waiting to be unwrapped Oh and I'll be the present you won't take back In the morning, the snow will be falling
Sweet harmony fills the air So sweet but it can't compare To the joy and the laughter that we will share 'Coz together We can make it forever
I love Christmas time When the bells ring in this heart of mine Just like Santa out on his sleigh tonight I love Christmas
Hey Santa let it snow With the season's hope and some mistletoe If we're arm in arm then the world will know I love Christmas
And I love you

I don't know the Spice Girls version, but it can't beat The Waitresses Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Couldn't miss this one this year!

It's one of those covers that by trtying to be as faithful as possible to the original just ends ups shwoing how much better the orginal was. They utterly fail to master the rather bored New York delivery of the original singer that helps make it such a masterpiece.

I can't choose between Fairytale in New York and Christmas Wrapping. Although since it took me two years to find out what it was called I think it'll have to be Christmas Wrapping.
All together now...
"Bah, humbug!" No, that's too strong 'Cause it is my favorite holiday But all this year's been a busy blur Don't think I have the energy
To add to my already mad rush Just 'cause it's 'tis the season. The perfect gift for me would be Completions and connections left from
Last year, ski shop, Encounter, most interesting. Had his number but never the time Most of '81 passed along those lines.
So deck those halls, trim those trees Raise up cups of Christmas cheer, I just need to catch my breath, Christmas by myself this year.
Calendar picture, frozen landscape, Chilled this room for twenty-four days, Evergreens, sparkling snow Get this winter over with!
Flashback to springtime, saw him again, Would've been good to go for lunch, Couldn't agree when we were both free, We tried, we said we'd keep in touch.
Didn't, of course, 'til summertime, Out to the beach to his boat could I join him? No, this time it was me, Sunburn in the third degree.
Now the calendar's just one page And, of course, I am excited Tonight's the night, but I've set my mind Not to do too much about it.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! But I think I'll miss this one this year. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! But I think I'll miss this one this year. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! But I think I'll miss this one this year. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! But I think I'll miss this one this year. Hardly dashing through the snow Cause I bundled up too tight Last minute have-to-do's A few cards a few calls 'Cause it's r-s-v-p No thanks, no party lights It's Christmas Eve, gonna relax Turned down all of my invites.
Last fall I had a night to myself, Same guy called, halloween party, Waited all night for him to show, This time his car wouldn't go,
Forget it, it's cold, it's getting late, Trudge on home to celebrate In a quiet way, unwind Doing Christmas right this time.
A&P has provided me With the world's smallest turkey Already in the oven, nice and hot Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?
So on with the boots, back out in the snow To the only all-night grocery, When what to my wondering eyes should appear In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year!
"I'm spending this one alone," he said. "Need a break; this year's been crazy." I said, "Me too, but why are you? You mean you forgot cranberries too?"
Then suddenly we laughed and laughed Caught on to what was happening That Christmas magic's brought this tale To a very happy ending! "
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Couldn't miss this one this year! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Couldn't miss this one this year!
Brilliant.

It really has to be the Waitresses (thanks for lyrics lowcult!), although way back in 97 when the spice girls were ace it did the trick for a short spell.

And anyone singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Kelly Osbourne's version is a treat. Nobody has mentioned the inspired lyric changes in the Spice Girls version of 'Christmas Wrapping' - more Christmas-themed b-sides should reference Tesco. , Michael. xxx

You're all forgetting Susanne Manning's genius version of Santa Baby from the Pop Idol Christmas thingie. Smoky giggle and all, it's perfect.
And Kate Bush's December Will Be Magic Again.

All I Want for Christmas was the last great Xmas song. Santa Baby, but I'm not sure who by, not the Madonna or Kylie one though. Christmas Wrapping obviously. And anything on the new Girls Aloud bonus CD.

Christmas Wrapping!
For years I heard it on the radio at Christmas but never heard who it was by.

The Waitresses were around in the 70s though. 'I know what boys like' is awesome as well. Whoever those mid-nineties girls were who claimed to be The Waitresses, yeah, not so much.
Anyhoo, the best christmas song is 'I Believe In Father Christmas' by Greg Lake, because it's depressing and awful and samples The Skaters' Waltz.

This thread is great - it is making me miss all the christmasses I spent working in shops where we had christmas CDs on constant repeat - I didn't appreciate it at the time, but it's just struck me that what the miserable office I'm in now really needs is lots of xmas music...
Personally, I love Mariah, the whole christmas album, and Last Christmas, althought not the the Whigfield version. I am not so keen on the 'Driving Home for Christmas' one, although as it's Christmas themed after a few repeats I usually end up being quite fond of it.
Ooh, just thought of another one, have no idea what it is but has some lyrics along the lines of 'I will return for you my love on Chrismas day', that's quite fun too.

My fave along with the Pogues is Dolly Parton's 'Hard Candy Christmas' where she can barely get through tomorrow without another poverty ridden Christmas! Gets me every time.
I also like Doris Day's 'Toyland' which can bring a tear - 'Once you pass it's border, you can ne'er return again!' So true.

Has anyone else started voluntarily listening to Christmas music already, or is it just me?
