This is a bit of a random question but it has been bothering me so I thought I'd ask. I'm not sure any lowculturers will know but I know a few of you frequent 'Popjustice' so you may be very knowledgeable about these matters.
My question is this:
Who is the cop ('Jack Gates') in the Akon video for 'Smack That'?
I ask because I have seen him in quite a few pop vidoes but not that I can recall on tv or film! And yet I do sort of recognise him. This may be because he looks a bit like an old version of the guy from 'The Passion of the Christ'.
He is also Mariah Carey's jilted husband in the video for 'We Belong Together' and he appears to be an older husband/pimp in the video for 'Mr Brightside' by the Killers.

Hello TheLovelyKate
The actor in the video is Eric Roberts. Brother of Wheelie-bin-gob Julia Roberts.

The only good thing Eric Roberts has ever done (besides single-handedly being in more videos in a year than Nelly Furtado) is father Emma Roberts, that one off Unfabulous and the future Nancy Drew.

That's not strictly true. He provided much-valued sustenance when the residents of South Park got snowed in at Mephisto's house.

Star 80!
Eric Roberts may actually be too low for many lowculture fans. But he definitely qualifies for a dozen or so lifetime achievement awards.

I vastly prefer him to Julia. I remember seeing him in The Coca Cola Kid years ago and being rather taken with him. It was quite a mental film - he's some kind of insane genius maverick marketing guy who goes to Australia to help them sell more coke or something.
He pops up all over the place - he was in CSI: Miami a while back. I believe that the TV Movie is his main medium though.

I saw him AGAIN the other day! He is in a sitcom on whatever ABC channel it is that you get on a freeview box (ABC+/ABC1?). The sitcom is called 'Less than perfect' and he is the well meaning but quite stupid boss of the heroine. When I saw him I believe my exact words were:
"Argh! It's Jack Gates!"

He's like chewing gum on the pavement: once you've noticed him you see him everywhere. He doesn't half get around though, I was just looking at his IMDB and he's got billions of credits.

Has he been in any cult films or TV programmes that are likely to have made popstars love him? Still can't quite work out why he is in so many videos!
