On the lunchtime news just now, some BBC head honcho is confirming that they've left the bidding war, so neighbours is going elsewhere. The contract lasts until March/April 2008, so after that, who knows...?

...maybe Grundy could kill Toadie in the last BBC episode.

I think Five will buy it and have some kind of Aussie hour with Home and Away, and a huge omnibus at the weekend. It's a shame to see it go from the BBC, but as long as there isn't a year long break (like when H&A moved from ITV to Five) I don't mind.

Whilst I agree it's a shame for Neighbours to leave the BBC I am very excited about the prospect of an omnibus at the weekend.

...this is assuming that Five win the contract for it. Anyone know what other channels are in the running for it?

ITV/ITV2 - I'd be surprised if Living didn't table an offer too, although I can't see them affording it.

But if Five gets it, surely they'll put it up against Hollyoaks? That doesn't seem terribly smart.

As it'd just be aired in the same slot there and they'd almost definately throw in a weekend omnibus on ITV2 to get the most of their money. Is this the beginning of the end then? Possibly. It'll inevitably lose viewers on another channel.Fremantle have pretty much shot themselves in the foot by being such greedy wankers.

Yep, and they're looking to schedule it against Hollyoaks, just like I said.
From broadcastnow:
I can't be alone in thinking that it'll be competing for a largely shared audience with 'Oaks, and may end up losing the fight, can I?

Noooo! Are TV Bosses fuckin insane? First BB8 up against The Apprentice and now this.
Cant they just shove Home & Away on at 6.30 as only about 15.5 people watch that anyway..

Fuck! This is the end of my life as I know it.
This may sound like an exaggeration but sadly enough it is not. Neighbours has been with me through loads. It's how I made friends at uni, how I still have things to talk about with people i'm no longer really friends with or elderly relatives . It's the glue that binds us together!
This is disastrous. Any other channel will ruin it. Plus if its up against Hollyoaks sadly I don't think it will win. And I most certainly don't want to have to choose.

Five are crazy if they don't put it on at 530 pm.
Gutted to see it go. Still, rather them than ITV.

Five are crazy if they don't put it on at 530 pm. This would make more sense - it'd still be an Aussie soap hour, just starting at 5.30 rather than 6. But I think the hole in the schedule they need to fill is at 6.30. Actually, what is on Five at 5.30 these days? I have no idea.

They'll probably extend CBBC until 6.
This is most inconvenient. I bet I'll forget to watch it loads Will there be no lunchtime viewing then?

A little piece of me cried at this news. A very small piece, because I am essentially dead inside, but still. Five is awash with foreign drama; it's difficult to find a British accent on it sometimes. Neighbours held a special place on the BBC, and seeing it go is sad.
The question is: in a Hollyoaks/Neighbours fight, which will win? I'd go with Neighbours, because Melbourne's ozone depletion means much more gratuitous shirtlessness.
