and in bizarro world, these are the results...
Best act in the world today Arctic Monkeys
Best album Amy Winehouse, Back to Black
OK, so these first two are fine, debatable, but fine. and then it goes mental.
Best track Manic Street Preachers, Your Love Alone is Not Enough
IN WHAT UNIVERSE?
Best video Kaiser Chiefs, Ruby
Best new act The Enemy
Best breakthrough artist Kate Nash
Best live act Muse
again, meh, but acceptable choices. Wuoldn't be my choices, but fair enough. And then it goes even more kerrazy...
songwriting Classic song award Stereophonics, Local Boy in the Photograph
a) what kind of an award is this and b) it's a decent tune, but come on.
Classic album award The Verve, Urban Hymns
Again on the pointless category thing. It's a decent album, fair dos.
Classic songwriter award Billy Bragg
again, pointless award, but whatever.
Innovation in sound award Sigur Ros
What kind of an award is this?
And can anyone tell me the difference between all the follwing meaningless awards?
Lifetime achievement award Johnny Marr
Q merit award Ryan Adams
Q hero Anthony H Wilson
Q legend Ian Brown
Q inspiration Damon Albarn
Q idol Kylie Minogue
Q icon Sir Paul McCartney
I mean, seriously, what? ?
I thought the Q awards used to be fairly sane. Boring, but sane (best album, best single, best band, best solo artist, best dance act, best video, best live act and ONE lifetime achievement type award). Like the magazine (which I bought for the first time in about a year last week, and it has gone so downhill I was shocked) the awards have no idea who they are for or what they are about.
Q - time to change or die.

Anthony Wilson is dead, Kylie had cancer and Paul McCartney had a divorce but I don't know why the others deserved their awards.

and in bizarro world, these are the results... Best act in the world today Arctic Monkeys No. No no no no no no NO. They are not good! They are not even great! Why is this band so popular with the critics?! I don't see anything good, fresh, or interesting about this band. I just do not get it. best track Manic Street Preachers, Your Love Alone is Not Enough Good song, but not the best track of the year by a long stretch. songwriting Classic song award Stereophonics, Local Boy in the Photograph Why suddenly invent this award.. and why award it to this song? Its the most random choice ever.. there are so many better songs out there than this.. why? WHY?! And can anyone tell me the difference between all the following meaningless awards? Lifetime achievement award Johnny Marr Q merit award Ryan Adams Q hero Anthony H Wilson Q legend Ian Brown Q inspiration Damon Albarn Q idol Kylie Minogue Q icon Sir Paul McCartney I mean, seriously, what? ? I dunno, maybe Q know their days are numbered and just threw all their big heroes together and gave them awards, because there probably wont be a magazine, let alone an awards ceremony next year? They are all pointless though, I agree. I wouldn't rate any of the people on that list bar Tony Wilson and possibly Damon Albarn. I still read Q, but you're right, it has dropped in quality these days, they just don't know who to appeal to anymore.

It's Q magazine, there's absolutely nothing else you can expect from their awards ceremony really.
I stopped buying a few months ago and haven't looked back. What a load of shite it is.

Another year, another pointless awards ceremony.
What the hell does an award for Merit mean?! Surely getting any award is a merit in itself? Twunts.
Good to see old chimpy chops Ian Brown doing the predictable thing and slagging off Kylie on the Jo Whiley show for being there. I bet She Who Knows Everything About Good Music thought that was really cool and edgy.
Still, Shirley Bassey looked fab on the red carpet

I have no real objections to the choice of winners- I quite like most of them even if I wouldn't personally rate them as the "best". But it is hard to tell award ceremonies apart sometimes. The same people seem to win all of them. Q is notable for the sheer amount of "Lifetime Achievement" type awards they give out every year though. The "classic song/album" awards are unusual. It just seems random. Why honour that particular song/album now? They were both pretty well received at the time weren't they?
The magazine itself seems to have become a print version of one of those list shows. Every issue seems to be 100 Greatest Tracks, 100 Greatest Albums, 100 Greatest Album Tracks, 100 Greatest B-Sides etc. Q really does seem to be a nostalgia fest. Mind you, it's appropriate. It's best days are a far behind it.

Amy Winehouse's award got left in a toilet. I applaud her (or Mark Ronson, whoever was responsible) for that excellent bit of meta-commentary on the whole thing.

Q seems to be suffering from anorexia at the moment. Its about half the size it used to be. At twice the cost. And without any actual proper, y'know, articles in it.
About the only magazine I still buy regularly is Edge, and thats mainly just cos its so nicely designed it makes my eyes happy. And even its not as good as it used to be. Bah...

Best track Manic Street Preachers, Your Love Alone is Not Enough IN WHAT UNIVERSE? I'm cringing now, but when this came out, I experienced a fit of temporary insanity and evangelised about its brilliance. I don't know why, it was probably something to do with Nina Persson, but on reflection it sounds exactly like every other Manic's song. Q is completely crap though. I switched to Word magazine for all my dad-rock needs a good while back. It is really good and is edited by top Smash Hits alumnus, Mark Ellen.

By a long shot.

Is there any difference between 'best new act' and 'best breakthrough act'? Are they not the same thing? Also while I don't mind either I wouldn't say that the Enemy or Kate Nash are the best anything given that they are respectively bargain basement versions of Artic Monkeys and Lily Allen.

Kate Nash pisses all over Lily Allen, but I've never even heard of The Enemy.
Q is completely unreadable. But then again, most magazines are. The worst one is Grazia - it really pisses me off how the clothes they punt often cost into the thousands - The whole point is it's a £1.60 cheap glossy - as if ANYONE who reads it can afford that stuff.

Kate Nash pisses all over Lily Allen, but I've never even heard of The Enemy. I agree about you about Kate Nash/Lily Allen, but it's more to do with disliking Lily Allen than liking Kate Nash. You're not really missing anything with The Enemy. Their songs are alright, but quite samey, and once you've heard them you'll probably forget them.

Heee, Kylie subtly pwned this shower of shite awards ceremony on that Radio 2 doc. David Tennant was asking her how important this and the Music Industry Trust awards she received were. She waxed lyrical about the latter but totally didn't mention Q at all.

I hate Kate Nash almost as much as I hate Bob fucking Geldof. And I hate him more than ANYTHING.
