Nominations have been announced... www.brits.co.uk/nominationsThings of note: > I wasn't sure Mika was going to be eligible for the British awards, what with being sort-of Lebanese, or whatever he is. > I only ever seem to hear of PJ Harvey when she's nominated for British Female. > Girls Aloud - Best British Group! > I'm completely surprised by the poppiness of the British Album category. > Rufus Wainwright - Best International Male! It was too much to hope for Darren Hayes as well, but still. > International Female is pretty good overall. > Outstanding Contribution might be a tad predictable. What do we think?

I think as ever, the BRITS are crap. Yes I know it's just the industry patting themselves on the back/to boost sales/industry votes, but really, the BRITs have been shit since 1998.
Male artist:Mark Ronson isn't really an artist is he? More a producer.
Female Artist I'd like KT to win it, but she won't. The rest gets a big fat meh.
Group I'd love the Aloud to win this, but they won't. As long as it isnt the Arctic Monkeys, I'll be happy.
Album All are over rated gash, and there are some glaring omissions from other artists.
Breakthrough act Again, none really appeal, but I can see Kate Nash or Klaxons winning this.
Live act Meh. Boring. All of 'em. I reckon Take That will take it.
single MARK RONSON Ft AMY WINEHOUSE – Valerie (a fucking cover of a song only a year old?!) MUTYA BUENA – Real Girl (Really?!) Again, a load of songs missing from the list, and what's there is GASH.
International Male Kanye will walk it.
International Female I'd like it to be Alicia Keys, but it will probably be Rihanna.
International Group & International Album Arcade Fire please.
Critics choice: Who is this woman? She's literally being launched off the back of the Brits, and she's not that good at all. And the fact she looks utterly different to her "artistically" lit press photos bothers me.
Lifetime achievement: Sympathy vote.

As I understand it, the Best Single nominees are the top 10 singles of last year based on sales and airplay. It used to be determined by sales alone - hence the reason Bob The Builder was once nominated - so things could be a lot worse.
My picks:
British Group - Girls Aloud British Album - Mark Ronson, Version British Male - Mark Ronson British Female - Bat For Lashes Live Act - Muse Single - Sugababes, About You Now Breakthrough - Klaxons International Group - Arcade Fire International Male - Timbaland International Female - Alicia Keys (though this is the one category where I'd be happy for any of them to win) International Album - Kylie Minogue, X

I'm glad they've done away with all the best pop/rock/dance/skiffle categories, but the critic's choice category can go away again.
Surely Paul McCartney has already had some kind of lifetime achievement award from this? And the following comment? 'This year the BRITs have joined the likes of the Grammys and the Queen who awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award and an MBE, respectively.' Hahahahahahahaha.
Best British male line up, usually the worst category at this thing, is pretty good this year. I'd like Hawley or Ronson to take it, I suspect Mika will. Was it me just ignoring him, or did James Blunt miss the nominations for this?
I suppose I still like KT Tunstall best out of the British female category (though I haven't heard Bat for Lashes' album yet - want to), but Drastic Fantastic wasn't very good.
Best British Group category is pretty darn great. I'd love GA to take it, expect it to go to the Kaisers, but would be happy with any of them.
Best British album from that lot, I'd like Arctic Monkeys. No idea who will win this one.
Best breakthrough will surely be a close run thing between Leona and Mika? Bat for Lashes winning might be cool, but might also ruin her career before it's really got going. The Klaxons could steal it, I guess.
Muse always win best live act in polls so there's no point anyone else turning up.
Half of the best single nominations are shite (1973? Worried about Ray? Sod off). About You Now gets my vote. In reality it will be Shine or Bleeding Love.
International male. Kanye.
As previously stated, the international female category is great, but Kylie, please. Or else Rihanna. Best international group is also pretty good. I'd like the Foos or Arcade Fire.
Best international album. I really want X. It will probably be Neon Bible or Because of the Times (which are also good).

I'm sure I'm going to be way off the mark here, but for my two penn'orth, these should win:
British Male: Mark Ronson British Female: KT Tunstall British Group: Girls Aloud (not a chance in hell of winning, but fantastic that they were even nominated) British Album: Version Breakthrough Act: Leona Lewis Live Act: Haven't seen any of them live, can't be bothered to speculate Single: 'Bleeding Love' International Male: Timbaland International Female: Rihanna International Group: Arcade Fire International Album: X Outstanding Contribution: Do Not Want

Oooh, i was talking about this 2 mins ago on the Rufus Wainwright forum. He should win, but he won't. McCartney hadn't got it earlier!? Apparently he was offered it in 2000 but it was withdrawn after he refused to perform at the ceremony. 'Outstanding Contribution And Willingness To Show Up' is rather a long-winded title for an award, so you can see why they chose to shorten it. As for the Critics' Choice award, what is that about? I don't have anything against Adele (though I can't say I have much for her either) but it's all strangely reminiscent of the time Steps were given an award for selling out 83 nights at the Birmingham NEC, or whatever it was for...

Ah, but that was to remedy the INJUSTICE of Steps losing out to Best Newcomer the previous year, and the OUTRAGE that followed. I'm still not exactly sure that Mark Ronson should be in the Male Solo category, but with artists like him they can't really go anywhere else. I shall look at the list again, and decide on my preferred winners.

There is no LCD Soundsystem or Robyn, therefore these awards are WRONG. And it's all very well putting Girls Aloud in Best Band, but then not to include them in Best Album or Best Single just makes it look silly. And "Real Girl" isn't even the best Mutya single let alone the ebst British single.... and breathe...

I shall watch this show only for Kylie's performance.
Why are Sharon and Ozzy presenting it? It's not 2003.

We have an early contender to win Most Likely To Have Been Furiously Masturbating Onto A Fretboard At The Time Of Being Solicited For His Opinion. From BBC News: I must say, being able to introduce yourself at parties as "the Daily Telegraph's rock critic" sounds fun. I bet it's one hell of a conversation starter.

X nominated for Best International Album? Seriously? It's barely average, and Blackout isn't even nominated to make up for it.

X nominated for Best International Album? Seriously? It's barely average, and Blackout isn't even nominated to make up for it. In all honesty, I chose X because I haven't heard any of the other albums (I keep meaning to get round to Neon Bible - the others don't interest me). It's grown on me a hell of a lot since I first listened to it though. As for Blackout, I might be alone in this but I really don't see the big deal. It's certainly Britney's best album, but that's hardly saying much. If anything I'd have put Bjork's Volta on the shortlist ahead of Kylie.

I'm pretty much the same on Blackout. It's quite good, but not terribly exciting or original and for me the high points don't match up to Britney's previous ones. I'd have liked Robyn's 'Robyn' to have been given a nod, since that was released here this year and it's ace. X nominated for Best International Album? Seriously? It's barely average What MADNESS.

Blackout is my favourite album of last year, but let's face it - Britney's not going anywhere near another award ceremony in the near future....
Even though I went her to re-launch with a huge performance of Toy Soldier

I've always thought that half of the fun of the BRITS comes from the fact that the nominees are usually irrelevant to the music scene and that every man and his dog knows the only good thing about having an award is that you can put a sticker screaming "BRIT AWARD NOMINEE/WINNER" on the inevitable re-issue of your latest album.

I think X is great but its clear that EMI had no hits last year so they put X on because its the only album they have that stands a chance of having longevity in the charts.
I am salivating at the prospect of a WOW performance at the show.

X nominated for Best International Album? . X is great. It's my fourth favourite Kylie album. Of the albums nominated, I only have that, Because of the Times and Neon Bible, both of which are fine, but way overrated. Because of the Times is only worth it for the singles, and Neon Bible, though better than because of the Times, isn't a patch on Funeral. I prefer X to either. This opinion may change after my birthday as I am getting the Foo's album.

I second that urgh. What hideous choices! I thought the Sugababes were going to walk this one. Guess it'll be a toss-up between Take That and Leona now.
And it turns out the big duet this year is going to be Klaxons and Rihanna. I'm actually quite excited about that one.
