Does anyone here like blues or soul music? I have a few compilations (mainstream stuff mostly) and the odd artist album (but only by big names like Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Billlie Holliday etc) and want more, but don't really know where to start. Any recommendations? I prefer stuff with words, and also prefer female vocalists generally.

Is Nina Simone to obvious a suggestion? Mr Fezza has a best of collection... And I know they are men but BB King & John Lee Hooker are worth a listen.

I always though Nina Simone was a jazz singer? Although I suppose strict genre boundaries aren't that important in the grand scheme.
Have you got any Aretha? Any best of will do, they're all the same, but she's great.

Yeah, I have Nina and Aretha albums already - thinking more of stuff that might have flown under the radar?

It's kind of got a reputation as being for boring old men in Fred Perry's, but I love Northern Soul. It's a bit hard to define what Northern Soul really is - by it's nature it tends to be obscure, but it can encompass all sorts of 60s and 70s slightly-dancy over-emotional soul. There are bleedin millions of compilations out there, but I would recommend This Is Northern Soul Vol.1 - The Motown Sound, which is lesser-known songs by (some very famous e.g. Supremes) Motown folks: www.amazon.co.uk/This-Northern-Soul-Vol-1-Collection/dp/B000008354/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201092483&sr=1-2 Do I Love You? Is pretty much a Northern Soul classic (I think it popped up on a KFC advert!) and This Love Starved Heart Of Mine by Marvin Gaye is amazing. The Supremes song is great too. Oh I'd also highly recommend any Martha and The Vandellas stuff. Again there are precisely a zillion compilations of their rather familiar hits, but my favourite album is Ridin' High, which you can get as a twosome with another album on CD: www.amazon.co.uk/Ridin-High-Sugar-n-Spice/dp/B0000647GS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201092896&sr=1-8 (I'd offer to do some knock-off Nigeling, but being a boring old 60s throwback, I just have these on vinyl and don't have one of those USB thingys).

I'll throw some Otis Redding, Al Green, Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack into the mix, simply because I love them. Check Amazon for their greatest hits and pick a couple of tracks each, see what you think.
