I'm totally divorced from modern music at the moment, but I just caught these on Jules Holland (who I hate, but I am too lazy to reach up and change the channel) performing "I'm not going to teach your boyfriend how to dance with you". They are totally horrific! The lead bloke can't even sing, he was seriously out of tune the whole way through. What horror. Anyone want to contradict me (eg. "it was a bad evening, he had tonsillitis") or join in on the whole 'wtf'ing I am currently suffering from. Despite my dislike of Adele, she can at least hold a tune rather more nicely than this shambolic lot.

They're called Black Kids. They are terrible. Whenever I hear the song when I am out, I go outside to join anyone I know who is having a cigarette. And I don't smoke.

You got the wrong end of the stick- what she is saying is that there are a lot of black soul singers and writers out there who dont get record company backing or hype like Winehouse/Adele/Duffy got. She never said they were crap or anything just that if you are a young female white girl who sings "black" music then you have a better chance of getting signed than an actual black girl. I think it was a good point.

She never said they were crap or anything just that if you are a young female white girl who sings "black" music then you have a better chance of getting signed than an actual black girl. I think it was a good point. I think that was the point she was putting across, but she didn't half put it across the wrong way "Singling out Adele and Duffy, who she knocked off the number one spot at the weekend, she says: "I'm not mad at them, but I'm wondering - how the hell is there not a single black person in the press singing soul? Adele ain't soul. She sounds like she heard some Aretha records once, and she's got a deeper voice - that don't mean she's soul. That don't mean nothing to me in the grand scheme of my life as a black person. As a songwriter, I get what they do. As a black person, I'm like: you're telling me this is my music? Fuck that!"" The "my music" does rankle a little bit. And why is she moaning - 'American Boy' is hardly 'You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman' is it...

Maybe she's right about soul, but if you look at the music scene as a whole black people are over represented, so you can't really argue they have less of a chance. She's basically saying, because she's black she's automatically more "soul" than a white person. And I'm sure Adele doesn't say she is soul or try to be soul, she just writes the type of music she likes. I think Estelle is one of those people who thinks black people should stick to 'black music' and white people to 'white music'.
The reason why there aren't any black soul singers doing really well is because it's boring. Everyone's seem a fat black woman with an amazing voice a million times.
Also, Amy, Duffy and Adelle aren't all just white, they belong to other minority groups: Jewish, Welsh, and Fat.

I love Black Kids. Never seen/heard them live so they could be shit. But their recorded stuff is actually fabulous.

The lead bloke can't even sing, he was seriously out of tune the whole way through. What horror. he is pretty to look at though? No. Estelle was rehashing some pretty dodgy 80s lite soul there. Did she hire the bass player who did the theme tune for Seinfeld? Black Kids were rather duff. I thought the singer might have inexplicably been trying to sound a bit like Robert Smith, but that was probably unintentional. The guitar solos were hilarious though, Jimi Hendrix doesn’t have anything to worry about. It really reminded me of those 'shredded' videos of dubbed guitar wankers, which is the funniest thing I have ever seen on YouTube (but I think you can only see them here now: blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/02/watch-the-parod.html). There’s no way that the guy from the Only Ones wasn’t wearing a wig, and I really wish he’d kept his jacket on.

I saw a bit of the show, does Adele really only have one dress?
I practically feel like I own it now.
