On one hand: it's political, controversial, award winning, anti Bush, a box office draw and has made Americans think. All good.
On the other: Michael Moore. I find him so objectional there's no way I'll go and see this documentary. I don't like his manner or attitude.
He's reportedly going to make a film about Blair's involvement in backing the war in Iraq next. Although there's a lot of anti war and anti Blair sentiment around, I'm not sure the English public will take to having an American point out our countrys deficencies.
I suppose it's a case of while I agree with a lot of things he has said and am pleased with the issues being raised I just don't like him.

I just saw this. I'm not going to try and go into issues of truth in documentary film making or how and why Moore presents sequences of events to best fit his agenda (but if I was going to do so, I'd ask -- why not? It's the audiences' fault if they can't comprehend that all narrative is fictionalised to some degree).
I broke my heart -- I don't think that was really the point?
What with the massive anti-Moore backlash going on, I didn't actually see this film as being all that damning. If you've read Stupid White Men and understand the connections between the Florida voting issues and the Bush/Bin Laden family connections, it didn't tell you anything you didn't already know (or think you knew, depending on who to believe). It was just quite sensitive in the personal elements, a lot less aggressive a film as Bowling For Columbine.
I liked the way in which it didn't focus too much on 9/11 and more on the war in Iraq. The Lily plotline was the one that made me break my heart, with the woman outside the White House shouting her down, calling her a hoaxer even though she had actually lost her son in Iraq. Although, afterwards, it made me think that the woman calling Lily a hoaxer may've been a Michael Moore hoaxer herself?
I'm well aware that Moore isn't to be completely trusted with the truth, but when he does get America thinking as zaffra says, you can't begrudge him too much.
BTW zaffra, MM isn't actually one screen very much, just as a v/o. I don't know if that'll persuade you to see it.

I just don't like his big fat hairy face - glad to see that on the posters his face is mostly hidden Metro gave the documentary two out of five stars, but they gave Around The World In Eighty Days three out of five!

Metro gave the documentary two out of five stars, but they gave Around The World In Eighty Days three out of five! But to be fair Metro is a right-wing rag freesheet. I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 today and cried my eyes out. It was a very well-made film, and it is funny in places, but overall it is just so real and harsh and devastating and disturbing and depressing. I would recommend it to anyone.

If you've read Stupid White Men and understand the connections between the Florida voting issues and the Bush/Bin Laden family connections. Of course what people like Moore conviently forget is that the Florida votes were actually all counted after the Supreme Court ruling and Bush actually won, but why let a small fact like that get in the way. :

I think "people like Moore" would respond by pointing to the fact that thousands of people were disenfranchised by Katherine Harris and her mob. And of course there was the "chad" debacle.

I'm no fan of Bush but Moore is a hypocrite of the most obscene kind. He picks up an angle and then edits his footage to fit what he wants. The Bin Laden's fleeing after 9/11 is down to Bush according to Moore where as if you actually look at the evidance you will see that others made this call. The Bush and Bin Laden families invested in the same companies. BIG DEAL, I have shares in HSBC now if I find out that Harold Shipman also owns shares does that make me an OAP killer. It's a ludicrous suggestion, many floated companies have upwards of two million shareholders.
