I *heart* this film sssoooo much. I think a lot of the modern touches are very clever and I love all the religious imagery in it.
And yes the soundtrack kicks ass.
Leo used to be beautiful didn't he?

I had a mad passionate love affair with this movie when I was about fifteen. It's totally underrated; I've yet to meet a teenage girl who hasn't worshipped it completely, yet critics never seemed to rate it too highly. It's a perfect example of how fucking amazing teen movies can really be.
One bad thing: it marked the decline of Leo from edgy indie actor to doomed matinee idol. He really is brilliant in it, though.

Really over-acted which considering how good Claire Danes can be is dsappointing. Anyway, Baz Lurhmann has the overacting problem a lot, I fucking hate Moulin Rouge and I've never been able to stomach Leonardo DiCaprio, so the outook was never very hopeful.

I loved it when I was 15, despite not being fond of Leo, Shakespeare or romance films. Seeing it again brought back this wonderful nostalgic feeling (even if it was only 6 years ago), which still makes it ok in my book.

Go on say what you feel! I'm with you in the Lurhmann makes trite films that seem to be populated by people who aer acting all the way upto 11. Claire Danes is horribly vapid in this film** and apart from a cameo in The Hours has all but vanished from the big screen, still that's what you get for running off with a man who dumps his 8 month pregnant girlfriend for you. ** and ginger.

You could always watch the Franco Zeffirelli version and hear Simon Bates's "Our tune" theme music in its original version.

And see the 'thirteen year old' Juliet and her humungous norks I love the Baz version. It's totally overblown and I love the visual style. It made GCSEs a hell of a lot less boring. Then we did Silas Marner...

I thought of that after I wrote this, she's also in The Hours for a couple of scenes looking really haggard.

What's disappointing for me is that an actress of Claire Danes' ability was reduced to playing a shitty girlfriend part in the decidedly mediocre Terminator 3. How did that happen exactly? The soundtrack to Romeo and Juliet is bloody amazing, particularly Garbage's utterly fantastic #1 Crush. You've reminded me to dig it out and listen - many thanks Ms Milk!

All my friends loved this at the time because they all really fancied Leo di Caprio. And I didn't like it because I have never ever liked him.
However, I do love Clare Dane's angel costume in the film and I find that one good outfit can make a film worth watching again and again (see Kate Winslet's big purple hat in Titanic).

I guess being at university put limits on her acting, but she was okay in 'Igby Goes Down'. I just saw a big poster on the tube for her new film 'Stage Beauty'. She kind of glows just like she did in 'Romeo and Juliet'. Anyway, it also stars her pregnant-wife-abandoning-bf Billy Crudup, on his bi-annual Next Big Thing outing. I remember that this film used to be called 'Compleat Stage Beauty' and is going for the 'Shakespeare in Love' audience. Or will at least be accused of that.
Also she has finished filming 'Shopgirl' which is adapted from Steve Martin's novel and sounds cute.

I think I must have been about 11 when I saw R&J and I loved it. It was the first ever DVD I bought. I haven't watched it since nearly 2 yrs ago when we studied the play for gcse, so I should really watch it again soon.
