Just saw this. Really liked it. It was too long, and Catherine Zeta Jones was almost entirely pointless, but putting that aside I was actually pretty surprised by how good it was.
I don't really rate Tom Hanks much, but Victor Navorski is the kind of character he can play in his sleep. He was actually pretty endearing. The main reason I went was for Diego Luna; his very presence pushes the film's mark up, although he's let down by a dodgy moustache and the fact that he's not kissing Gael Garcia Bernal.
There were some genuinely funny moments, and although the shift in tone was a little too extreme in some places, it didn't jar too much. 'He really loves that goat' should be remembered as one of the all-time greatest punchlines.
I'd recommend this highly, although possibly not if you don't like your movies washed down with a spoonful of Spielberg-endorsed sugar.

Not even the presence of the Mighty CZJ could convince me to see this or any other film starring Hanks. I hate him.

This was the only reason I've even acknowledged this film's existence. Is he in it enough to warrant seeing the film? I hate the Hanks. What has happened to Diego Luna? He's really lost it career-wise and I'm not impressed by the skinnyness nor the dubious facial hair neither. If I'd had to predict, I would have thought that he would have been bigger than Gael. Hmmm.

I watched Catch me if You Can last night and for the majority of it wondered if the Tom Hanks character had suffered a stroke but at the end I realised he was trying to do an accent.

Hmmm. Well if you're a hardcore Diego fan then yes, I'd say it's worth seeing. He has a fairly big part, although he doesn't appear for about for thirty minutes in, so you could always arrive late. The moustache really is quite appalling, mind. Why must pretty boys always grow dodgy facial hair to prove themselves as serious actors? It really is distressing.

As they say on Television Without Pity: Oh my God WORD. Going to see a film starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg is how I would punish my kids if they did something really atrocious. Actually, I wouldn't, because I think that borders on child abuse.

I refuse to watch any film with this man in it. But then again, that seems to be true of many of the Lowculture people. Does this mean that Tom Hanks is Highculture?

He's beyond lowculture -- so far beyond he becomes high culture. He most certainly didn't start there. Two things: - Every character is exactly the same. I don't see how people are blind to this. It's like the main characters in channel five films -- a single mom who is also a cop/lawyer/doctor struggling with her family/ex/cancer. Hanks is stuck in some sort of groundhog day where he is forever picking up scripts where he'll play an everyman with a heart of gold struggling with memories of 'Nam/AIDS/living in an airport-slash-on a desert island/Leonardo DiCaprio.
- Every character is so fucking worthy. My father's favourite actor is Jimmy Stewart -- I've got the same problem with him, as Hanks seems to be a modern day Stewart. I'm just dreading the day they remake (the awful, manipulative schmaltz of) It's A Wonderful Life with Hanks as the lead. Doesn't it seem enevitable? He'd be so smug about it.
So basically, yes. I dislike the overrated, undertalented Tom Hanks.
