The books are very good. It is much darker than Harry Potter.

They're making 'His Dark Materials' into a film which could be really good, although I read that they're removing references to God and the Church so as not to upset middle America - therfore it could be quite shit.

It will be a very short film if they remove all the references to the church and god, not to say a little confusing and pointless as well. I really hope they don't.
I quite fancy going to see the play, which is supposed to be very good. Has anyone here seen it?

Because that's a dangerous problem in todays world.

I quite fancy going to see the play, which is supposed to be very good. Has anyone here seen it? I have seen it. I found Lyyyyyyyyyyyyyra's west country accent annoying(I think that it was something to do with how old oxford sounded) and it moved very very quickly. I preferred part two to part one as it slowed down a bit and the characters got a chance to develop. Nice sets loads+loads of scene changes. I liked the actors last year(patricia hodge and timothy dalton as well!!!!) but i don't know about this year's lot. See it all in one lot (with a one hour break) rather than on different days. The witches are boring+annoying in the play.

I enjoyed this film a lot but was left a little empty by the almost sudden and somewhat unsatisfactory ending.
It is definitely a weird and interesting concept, I'm ordering the books now while I type. It has me craving for more of these films. However it felt like it barely scraped the surface and revealed the magnifying glass too early. It was all too obvious an answer to the mystery. We all knew it was Olaf the second the house burnt down.
Stiflers Mom is again, an outstanding extra. The ultimate extra to any film.

I read all the books about a year and a while ago. I really enjoyed them. Like someone said, they're very dark, very witty. However, I felt that, although cast well in terms of looks, Jim Carrey ruined it - he put too much of himself in. There was just too much gurning and strangeness. Count Olaf is meant to be strange, but Carrey made him into too much of a caricature.
A couple of things were changed from the books, but that's slightly inconsequential -- although it was a pity they removed the entire Lake Lachrymose storm scene. Meryl Streep was okay. Billy Connolly was surprisingly good.
7/10.

Well apparently they're turning God, into Communism. Because that's a dangerous problem in todays world. God into communism and the director has quit! It'll be shit then. Perhaps the 2025 re-make will be more faithful to the book.

I can't believe the Lemony Snicket apathy on here. The film was ace, and the books are acer. There's thirteen in the series, and it's up to the 11th now, but the next one isn't planned for release until late this year, so you all have plenty of time to catch up. And you really should. The first five might start to come across as repetitive, but they're all short and easy enough to read in one sitting, and by the time you get to the sixth you won't be able to think of anything else. I promise you, they're that good.
