For anyone who is interested. I watched A Tale Of Two Sisters. It is awesome. Such a good twisty plot that once you think about you get relaly involved. I also love horror films and don't really get scared. But there was one point where I jumped out of my seat, screamed in a manly way and then had a panic attack for 10 minutes. Where I couldn't slow my breathing down at all and I was just expecting to die. I was that scared I was wondering wether I should just give up and goto bed and watch it another time. But I decided to stay on and glad I did.
It's so chilling and really good.

I did not even "get" A Tale of Two Sisters, but still regard it as brilliant. Some very striking and disqietening moments. Western cinema just does not even come close.

I'm a big fan of the 'Tartan Asian Extreme' series. They're not all good though, the worst I've seen is probably Ring 0, what a major dissapointment after the triumph of the first two. The very best has to be the one already mentioned, Tale Of Two Sisters. After seeing a few of the series already, including The Eye, Audition and Dark Water (all of which were excellent), I was blown away. It just gets everything right and is probably the scariest film I have seen ever. It is so well directed, well acted, has a nice complex plot (which you can actually understand once you get your head round it). It also looks beautiful and professional and has genuine moments of suspense and terror. Had this been spoken in English, it would be the perfect horror film. I'm used to reading subtitles by now but they are a distraction.
I like that all the good ones are being remade but not enough of them have been done to know whether its a good idea overall. I thought The Ring remake was fantastic and majorly improved on the original. It remains to be seen what the American sequel is like but I fear disaster. The Grudge was good to a lesser degree, but still improved on the original. I know Dark Water is getting a remake, starring the lovely Jennifer Connelly, should be a good'un. The Eye is rumoured to be getting a remake and The Grudge 2 is on the way.
The Japanese/Thai etc. deserve all the credit for these horrors, but only the Americans have the budget to show these films at their full potential.

My brother bought Shiri which was a bit crap but in it there was a book going into detail about all the Tartan Asia Extreme titles. It was quite worth the price of the DVD. You might be able to find it in better films though.

On these recommendations, I'm going to buy Tale of Two Sisters right now! Well I hope you did, cause it's great. I loved the twist in the storyline. Both chilling and really sad. If you really liked The Grudge then you might find it a little slow as it's not as obvious, but the subtlety of the images and camerawork really gave it an unbeatable atmosphere.

Can anyone recommend what to watch next? Here is what I've seen so far:
Ring Trilogy (1 & 2: *****, 0: *) The Eye: **** Dark Water: **** Tale of Two Sisters: ***** Audition: **** The Grudge: ****
Have I seen all the good ones or are there more?

Battle Royale. It's not so much of a horror. But it's very extreme. Just make sure you never ever see the sequel.

Battle Royale 2 is possibly the worst, most disappointing film I've ever seen. Someone told me as much and I thought they must be a bit wrong and it'd be OK, but it really is terrible. I regret wasting one minute of my life watching it. So everybody, take snuff. I mean take snuff's advice.
...mind you it did have two bits that made me laugh, one was the crap new teacher character suddenly bellowing 'Meeeeerry Christmas' and the other was the crap new teacher flying through the air in an unconvincing rugby-style manoeuvre. But still, do not watch it.
There's some film called something like Spiral that's meant to be quite good, back on the subject of Japanese horror films. And if anyone still hasn't seen Akira and Ghost in The Shell (which aren't horror at all) then they're definitely worth a look.

I remember when I saw Battle Royale 2 and made it an instant purchase and was really looking forward to watching it. I just could not believe how boring it was. The plot was totaly confusing. They were fighting against the battle royale sustem. Yet they were still killing the school kids who had been forced into the battle system. And then they ended up in iraq! WTF was that all about! It just seemed like a way of making a film to bash america. A complete waste.

I watched a Tale of Two Sisters last night, and was so utterly confused by the end of it! There's a point where you think you've cracked it, and then the film just laughs you in the face and then runs off somewhere else. After a while, you stop trying to keep track and just follow it through for the scares. And it really is terrifying. But there was one point where I jumped out of my seat, screamed in a manly way and then had a panic attack for 10 minutes. Where I couldn't slow my breathing down at all and I was just expecting to die. Was that when the hand shot out from under the sink and grabbed her wrist? I knew it was going to happen, but the timing of it all still frightened the hell out of me!

I am completely crap at watching scary films and Asian ones in particular scare the bejesus out of me. Even when nothing's happening, the atmosphere is totally terrifying. I was lying on the floor resting a cup of tea on my chest when the woman goes up to investigate the water tank in Dark Water. This was not a sensible move, health and safety (or carpet)-wise.
I had to switch The Grudge off because it was driving me a bit mental. It also seemed very repetative, does it ever progress?
I watched The Host the other night and was disappointed at how not-scary it was. But it was more of a monster/action film than a horror I suppose.
Aduition I found more yuck than scary. However, I did get a cool promotional pen which looked like a syringe at the screening.

We had a lecture on Japanese Horror Films a few months. Although most of it reminded me why I don't go to too many lectures any more, we did get to see clips from a film called "Attack Of The Killer Pussy", and another one which involved a man with a masive drill for a cock.
I also learnt that in Japan horror films are pretty much chick flicks, with ladies being by far the biggest consumers of them.
