Film of the year!
Toni Collette is as watchable as ever, Steve Caroll is strangely attractive yet huggable as the gay, the pervy grandfather is a treat and best of all is Olive.
The final scene where she finally gets to perform is the funniest thing I've seen for a long, long time.

I *thought* Steve Carrell was playing gay in this. It's that finely trimmed beard. Even more reason than before to go and see it!

You're raining on my parade! I already started a thread on this.
And yes, the film is properly amazing.

It's only six post below or something. Sloth is a sin you know.
Anyway, this is in some ways a brilliant film, although I wasn't so keen on the semi-meaningful bits. But as slightly pretentious and whimsical black comedies go it's up there.
The 'performance' scene is genius, laugh out loud funny. The body snatching is pretty amusing as well. It wasn't really realistic enough to believe that the bad things were really happening, and therefore it didn't elicit that much sympathy, from me at least.

Loved this film. Very funny. Steve Carell was just, ahh, I wanted to 'help' him, fyknowarrimean!
The dance at the end was awesomeness. How creepy were the other pageant girls?!?!
I liked how it didn't end on a typical Hollywood ending. Mind you, most US indie films don't really.
eta: There is a big debate going on at IMDB about whether the Grandad was a peadophile and abusing the girl. FFS! Also the 'Biker Dad' in the audience at the final dance is a paedophile, because he stands up and cheers. Even though the actor who plays this character has posted several times on the board saying he was a DAD not a PAEDO. Brill.

He wasn't a paedo? Then why did he cheer someone else's child doing 'sexy' dancing?
On the subject of Granddad's moral failings, can you actually snort heroin? Injection I get, and smoking it over a bit of tin foil is widely known of, but snorting it?

Wasn't he cheering because Olive was nowhere near as disturbing as the other kids? He was sat there earlier with earplugs in, obviously not enjoying the show.
I did think for a moment that he might have been a paedo, but I think it would have been more obviously done if he was.
I'd love to know what they told the terrifying children to get them to take part in the movie. Did they think it was going to be a film praising those awful pageants?

They probably just told them (i.e. their parents) that it was going to raise their chances of being the next Britney Spears and so the parents decided humiliating their progeny before a whole new catchement of millions was a price worth paying.

fuck. I just wrote an excellent long story about Chopper's life. And the computer crashed just as I hit send. FUCK. I agree with Michael. He's probably got a sow of a wife called Darlene who drags him along every year and he finds it crushingly dull. Olive was different and crap and funny, and he was applauding that fact.

I saw it last night and loved it. So many beautiful details that just had me giggling all the way through, and great performances from all the actors.
Abigail Breslin is awesome, and I look forward to seeing her in more stuff, the guy playing her brother was superb - and acting without speaking isn't easy - and I really enjoyed seeing Steve Carroll playing a "straight" role. (Apart from his run, which was full on comedy!)
I've also seen the stuff on Imdb, and was amazed at how stupid some people can be. Aside from the paedophilia stuff, which is clearly nonsense, one guy said he would have walked out if he'd realised that the teenager's T shirt said "Jesus was Wrong" - apparently that's an evil thing to put in a film and "really crosses the line".

I was trying to work out what that T-shirt said - I thought it was "Jesus was brown" which imo is way better...

Boy George revealed in his first autobiog that snorting was his chosen method of getting some god awfull low grade street level diamorphine (heroin to the uninitiated) into his system.

I can't believe it's out on dvd so soon.
It's just received 3 Screen Actors Guild nominations, Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Grandpa and Olive, and the ensemble cast thing.
It's looking very good for Oscar.

I watched this on DVD tonight, and when the pageant woman was trying to stop Olive's dance, I was really hoping someone would grab her and ask her to explain precisely in what way Olive's routine was more depraved or disturbing than any of the other girls'. Loved this film. I thought the acting was uniformly superb.
