Ooh I forgot to mention that, along with Nikki Kidman, the good thing about this film was Kath Day-Knight's neighbour Sharon as Lyra's maid type I put that in Spoilers since I didn't know before hand and seeing her was probably the best surprise.

Before yesterday I didn't want to see this because I hadn't read the book. Now I don't want to see it because the one great strength I saw in the first book (I've read all three since Sunday evening) was the greasy, dirty, Edwardian tone of the thing; something which seems to be missing in the trailers. If all the characters are living in this mad religious steam-punk world I want to see the dirt under their fingernails, the shit on their boots and the oil stains on their furs.
Nicole Kidman does look amazing though, and I don't find Daniel Craig strangely hot with a beard, so I'll probably go and see it.

watched it last night.... the film rushes at a ridiculous pace through all the back story and stage setting right up until the big fight scene at the end which eats up like 10% of the films duration... made by hollywood for bushists... and we all know that due to the whole war on god storyline the sequels are just going to be worse and even more detracted from the books.... nicole kidman however was enjoyable....

I haven't read the books so can't compare but the film is absolute drivel.

Saw it last night. Enjoyed it in many ways, but left the cinema feeling a bit non plussed and disappointed also. It really did move along at way too fast a pace for my liking. There was no real build to anything and virtually no scene setting whatsoever. If you hadn't read the book I felt most would have thought, what the hell's going on? I've only read the book once but its makes me want to read it again immediately so as to try and make sense of why they haven't made the brilliant film it should have been. I thought Nicole Kidman done a good job but, for me, she wasn't Mrs Coulter. An irrelevant point perhaps but I thought Mrs Coulter should have had black hair. Nicole looked a bit too much like Madonna circa her 'Vogue'/'Express Yourself' period for my liking. It be might be a cliched suggestion but I always visualized Mrs Coulter being played by an Angelica Houston type. The girl playing Lyra is a good little actress, but the accent grated on me. "ain't doing it, innit" might be something she didn't exactly say, but it was all too much in that vein. The daemons were excellent. I wonder how well its doing at the box office. Where I saw it, (Odeon, Leciester Square), there can only have been 20/30 people there.

I enjoyed it BUT it wasn't in the same order as the book. In the book Lyra gets captured and taken to Bolvanger and then the armoured bear king fight thing is nearer the end. In the film there was the bear fight and then she just went to Bolvanger of her own free will. And it finished far too early. The trailer had bits in it that are clearly the bits from the end of the book but they weren't in it. Very odd. Maybe it's becuase The Subtle Knife is a much shorter book so it needs to be padded out? Daniel Craig looked heavenly and Dakota Blue Richards (what a shit name) was very impressive. I was worried she was going to be lame as in the trailer she seemed very wooden. Pan was lovely - I want one.

I really liked it. I haven't read any of the books, and don't have a strong desire to as I think I've passed the right age to fully adore them, but I understood what was going on. Whether this was because I was aware people complained it was too confusing and I paid closer attention, I don't know. I'm sure the books go into much greater detail about Dust. Dakota Blue Richards (what a shit name) was very impressive. I was worried she was going to be lame as in the trailer she seemed very wooden. Thought exactly the same. Maybe you just needed to get into her character. She acted really well, and she will be sooo pretty when she is older. Her accent did grate after a bit, though. Few qualms: - they didn't flit enough between good and bad, and we stayed pretty much with Lyra the whole time. I also got the feeling of her being in no state of peril at certain moments in the end, but towards the end it becomes more justified as she is extremely resourceful and uses every bit of information told to her - I liked that. - the witches seemed very underused, and also extremely vague. I hope we get to hear more about them and their history in the next two films. - sorry - thought Daniel Craig was rubbish in this. Kidman however, was superb.
