I went to see Apocalypto yesterday, something I really didn't see myself doing, especially as every time I see the ad on telly with Mel blethering away in a self-righteous fashion I tend to tell him to fuck off. However, I was really curious when I read Peter Bradshaw's review in Friday's Guardian: "It almost puts Mel Gibson into a kind of insane-genius league, not too far from the adventures of Werner Herzog... for all [Gibson's] personal obnoxiousness, the truth is that his mad and virile film makes everything else around look pretty feeble."
It is a completely mental, shitting-yourself-every minute, gorefest, but for the most part it's essentially a chase movie, albeit with inventive uses of bee hives and poisonous frogs. It's disappointing that there wasn't more of the crazy Mayan city, because that was completely cool. There are some utterly ridiculous bits, but these can be excused on the grounds of also being kind of great too (i.e. the panther).

Blood and cuts everywhere. Found it to be very exciting and highly enjoyable.
