I saw Rent the other week.
We could not work out whether it was quite good, or quite shit. Have any of you lowcultures seen Rent? You're all a bunch of gays and free thinking female types, so surely you have. What were your thoughts? Huh? HUH?

I absolutely adore the movie version of Rent, but you have to switch your brain off at the start.
While it is totally dumb in many ways, there are so many brilliant moments that you can forgive it. The stoves being emptied into the ally, Mimi blowing out her candle as she enters Roger's apartment, Angel standing outside the front door alone for ten minutes to make a *that* entrance, Rosario Dawson howling her way through Out Tonight.
The real trouble is that it was shot too much like a stage version. It's at it's best during Without You where it abandons the sets and lets the action tell you more than the character singing alone ever could. The shot of Mimi buying drugs in the glorious sunshine, the members of Life Support gradually fading away as they laugh and joke and a single look between Maureen and Joanne at Angel's bedside. If there had been more of this then it would have worked a lot better I think. It was too faithful to the musical.
More than anything I think Rent suffers from having so many great songs, but no real show stopper.

Gah! I did a search, and looked through the threads from the last year. My detection skills are terrible. Jessica Fletcher would gob on me. I think my main problem with Rent was that none of the characters were too likable, or believable. Partly because they're all so caught up in there own lives and the need to be individual, that I can't even believe they'd care too much about each other. Quite good songs though.

I liked it, but I'm a big fan of the musical.
It was too faithful, and making some of the sung dialogue from the show into spoken dialogue (especially when it still bloody rhymed) was a bit annoying.
And the original cast is too bloody old now, especially Mark, who looked about 40.

She ruins Out Tonight? Nooooooo waaaaaay maaaaaan. That was literally the only bit of this sorry excuse for a movie I enjoyed. And I really really really enjoyed it. Rosario Dawson is mega full stop anyway.
The rest of it made me want to gag, so self-congratulatory and just... ugly, musically. Tango Maureen? La Vie BoFuckingHeme? Shut up! That's my humble opinion anyway.

I was nearly ejected from my friend's house the other day for suggesting that, having gone back to the soundtrack of the musical and given it another listen, it really wasn't very good.

Ah yes, and Rosario Dawson ruins 'Out Tonight'. You are joking right? OK perhaps 'ruins' was a little strong, but I preferred Daphne Rubin Vega. In Dawson's defence, I'm sure she was much better than Mel B.

Daphne Rubin-Vega? As in the lead singer from 80s girl group Pajama Party? I never knew she was in the OC of Rent!
I liked this film though I do think they kept it a bit too "stage-y", and some of the cast were clearly way too old to be playing those parts. Rosario Dawson was surprisingly good, I thought Tracie Thoms as Joanne (I think) had an amazing voice though, shame she didn't have more songs to sing.
The US DVD has way more extras than the paltry UK version though, so if you're going to buy it, I'd go for that one...
