Were all pretty much as predicted, then. I'd have liked to see Mark Wahlberg get best supporting actor, and I don't think the Departed is that amazing, but I do support Jenifer Hudson and Helen Mirren, and I hear Forest Whitakker is very good.

I was rooting for Mark Wahlberg too, but I really loved The Departed. Hopefully Martin Scorsese will now realise everyone prefers his violent, sweary films with Rolling Stones songs on the soundtrack to the boring period dramas.

The only one I agreed out and out with was Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine.
Yes, Dame Helen is amazing and fantastic and wonderful, and in The Queen she was sublime, but it's almost as if Meryl Streep is taken for granted now, and I did think she was better in Prada than Helen was as HRH.
The Last King Of Scotland wasn't as great as a lot of people thought it was, and while Forest Whitaker was good, I do wish Peter O'Toole had won, not just because he's old and deserves it, but because he was so perfect in Venus.
And as for Best Supporting Actress, whilst La Hudson was very good, Rinko Kikuchi was even better in Babel, and that's not taking into account that she didn't speak for the role. And I wouldn't have minded Abigail Breslin winning either.
The Departed was enjoyable, but it's a remake. I don't approve.

I think the best actress category was sooo strong this year. I'd have given it to all of them.
The Radio Times had an interview last week with Dame Judi, Dame Helen and may-as-well-be-Dame Meryl. Awesome.

I think it's a measure of Meryl Streep's talent that she habitually picks up nominations even for films no-one remembers. One True Thing anyone? Music Of The Heart? Thought not. Couldn't agree more - Rinko Kikuchi was absolutely sublime. She owned that film. I'm not sure it's really a supporting role, but then you could argue there are no clear leads (as with Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls). I was glad to see Alan Arkin win as well - I didn't understand the fuss about Eddie Murphy's performance at all.

It's very unfair to think that Music Of The Heart got a nomination, yet Marvin's Room, The Manchurian Candidate and especially her performance in The Hours didn't. But then life in unfair.
