Saw this yesterday. Had been expecting good things, and wanted to support Thomas Turgoose (the lead actor), being a former Grimbarian myself.
The plot was OK, but not amazing - it took its time to get going, and the characters weren't that well fleshed out. PLUS there were some incongruous later-than-1983 elements (Strawberry Switchblade's Since Yesterday was from 1984 for one thing).
But the thing that annoyed me so much I couldn't ignore it was that everyone had a different northern accent. There were about 15-20 different accents, from all over the north. I don't know if that was deliberate or not, but it was really grating.

The fact that bloody edith bowman and that idiot film reviewer on radio 1 have kind of adopted this as their "pet-project- of- british -films- to -bring- to -the- masses" has put me off seeing it.
Which is a shame.

I saw it despite Edith, although in truth I may have seen it sooner without her, and I loved it. I loved Woody and I had a burning crush for Lol throughout. I saw Shaun and Combo as the same character, just separated by age and bad experiences. Thankfully Combo's actions at the end stopped Shaun from following in his footsteps.
Lowculture fact - Woody is played by Joe Gilgun aka Emmerdale's Eli Dingle (and Coronation Street's Jamie Armstrong back in the day)
