Very disappointing. By no means a terrible film, it just wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Some parts were very funny, the Sandman effects were amazing, the action was good, but the alien costume and Venom were wasted. I could hardly wait to see one of my favourite comic villains on screen, but this was just pathetic. He never even said 'we are Venom'. And his death was stupid. Here's hoping he actually survived though, will be back for Spider 4. Nevertheless, an entertaining film, just a wasted opportunity.

As disappointing superhero third bits go, was it worse than X-Men 3?

No, but then again, I quite liked X-Men 3. I'd say that there isn't as much of a clutter of characters and plots, but there are still plenty of things to deal with (although I did think that each of the plots got the amount of screen time they deserved, with the Peter-Harry-MJ one not being totally lost like I'd thought it would have been).

It was not great, but better than I expected. The first half - two thirds waw better than the last section. Funny though and liked the way that Peter Parker goes emo - eyeliner and everything!

It was fine. About on par with the second, and still way better than the first.
These films are a bit of a shambles. They don't provoke any emotion in me at all:
The lovey-dovey parts - Peter's annoying, MJ's annoying - i don't care if they split up, get back together or die.
The action parts - I'm never on the edge of my seat, it's obvious that Peter's going to catch whatever damsel falling through the air at the last minute.
The sad parts - terribly cheesy.
Topher Grace was hot though.

Who cares how good it was? James Franco strips down to his boxers for purely gratuitous reasons! Tobey Maguire dons hipster hair and clothes, and dances! Kirsten Dunst lip syncs terribly! The butler conveniently reveals a major plot point just in time for the final act! It's one of the funniest films of the year.

Plus points - James Franco in his pants, Venom (all 20 minutes of him), JJ Jameson, Topher Grace
Minus points - evil emo fringe and eyeliner, the evil dance routine, Sandman offering virtually nothing to the plot, "I forgive you", MJ being a whiny cow, the British reporter
Overall, there was too much going on and any tension in the action scenes was instantly deleted by the disorientating camerawork.
It was really pissing me off 30 minutes from the end.

Aaaargh! The reporter! I REALLY hoped she was going to die. Whoever said they didn't give a monkeys about Peter and MJ was right, too. I did like the way there were a few ackowledgements in the film that Spiderman was actually a bit crap as a superhero. They need to make number 4 a remake of the Spiderman and his amazing friends cartoon, if only cos IceMan and FireStar were always a trillion times more exciting.
And I'm so bored of this 'Peter Parker wrestles with his pride/conscience/inner demons crap'.
New director, new writers and maybe new actors now, please. I did laugh a lot, which was nice... but the action and drama sequences were just dull...

I've never actually managed to watch Spider-Man 2 all the way through as it's just so tediously dull so I think I'll be giving this one a miss.

I liked it. The Peter/MJ bits were really boring, Kirsten Dunst's miming was terrible, honestly, really so bad. I liked Topher and Venom was cool Hopefully he managed to put on the Venom suit in time to escape the bomb. xx

I didn't realise Topher Grace's evil incarnation had a name. And I didn't realise how badly Kirsten was miming - I thought she had quite a nice voice!
At first I thought Brit Reporter was an Emily Blunt cameo - I was disappointed when it wasn't. And I loved Parker Posey-esque receptionist at the newspaper.
And James Franco in his shorts. He just IS the sex.

I was so disappointed by this, after loving Spiderman 2. When will directors realise that throwing everything they can think of into a film makes it over long and undersatisfying? This suffered the same fate as Pirates 2 in that respect.
Sandman wasn't needed at all. He added fuck all to the plot, and I hate the way he was shoehorned into having a connection with Peter. "Oh yeah! ACTUALLY, he killed your Uncle Ben after all." Yawn. They could have left him for Spidey 4, and then concentrated on all the other things in here more effectively. Someone I went with said that Sandman was needed to make Spidey angry enough for the venom to work, but I don't buy that. Something else could have made him angry enough without weighing the whole film down.
Franco wasn't in his pants for more than 4 seconds! And that lovely sight was out weighed by the similar length full screen shot of the American flag. All the mentions in this thread got me expecting more.
All the effects did look incredible. I particularly loved the crane/office building bit, even if the girls did take fucking ages to realise the girder was about to smash into them and run away.
These films also do the smaller, human and comedy bits well too. J Jonah Jameson is ace, as was the fact that they resisted making Bad Peter cool, and he actually turned into an even bigger nerd who just thought he was it.

"Hey! Gwen Stacey! Let's make up for not putting you in the other films by massively underusing you here and giving you no ending!" "Okay Sam! Thanks!"
I actually rather liked Sandman, although I got bored of the worried-sadface he pulled for nearly every scene. Venom I felt was a bit underused - in fact they tried to pack way too much into this film and left it a little lacking. And Mary-Jane was just INFURIATINGLY SHIT. Worse, the writers realised this and tried to pretend that Peter was more annoying and self-centred than she was, but actually, no Mary-Jane was just infuriatingly shit and no amount of trying to pretend other characters infuriatingly shitter will make me sympathise with her.
Spiderman works when it's being bouncy, slightly teen angsty mindless fun. When it tries to tack morals and meanings and gets all holier-than-hou, "better than your average blockbuster" bullshit, then it's all over. OVER.

Peter looked quite cool when he turned into the lead singer of The Feeling, they should have let him be less ridiculous. I hated Mary Jane, the American flag bit and the annoying kids near the end. "MJ" is just a total loser and undeserving of Spiderman. He should get off with Gwen. Actually, how many different strings to her bow does Gwen Stacy have? A physics genius AND a model? Bryce Dallas Howard looked quite ill with blonde hair though.
James Franco is ace when doing his cheeky grin thing - it reminded me of how much I loved him in Freaks and Geeks (a complete Franco-fest and brilliant show in it's own right too). The pants were good, but as Nurse D says, over way too quickly. He may have to replace Tobey in my top 10 (in fact all through the film I was wondering why the hell Tobey was in my top 10 at all). I wasn't too sure about Topher Grace's hairdo.

Spiderman 1 > Spiderman 3 > all shit things > Spiderman 2
I thought it was good because it was far more comic-like than the others and embraced the funniness, was lolling at emo Spidey.

I thought it was great, it really captured the feel of a comic book for me while still being a great movie. I loved the humour, the action was great but the best bit was the dancing at the jazz bar. I enjoyed how no-one even tried to explain how or what made Sandman happen, all we needed to know was that it there was a scientific accident and he looked damn immpressive after.
As I know a little about plots in the comic books I'm guessing that Gwen Stacy and the professor will play bigger roles in future films. I also noticed a framed front cover in JJ's office that read "DR OC STILL AT LARGE?". The way that Eddie kept emphasing he was Eddie Brock Junior lead me to speculate that an Eddie Brock Senior could also show-up someday.

Beyond dire. Appalling acting (Tobey Mcwhatsit has one expression). Massive plot holes. Really really bad CGI in some places, American-flag-waving, pointless baddies, Kirsten Dunst just WHINED - god I wanted to shoot her, stupid logic no less than THREE "plummet off the side of the building, lets have a fist fight on the way down" scenes.
Utter, utter, utter, bollocks. Apart from James Franco, he was quite good.

I laughed at MJ's last singing bit when she sang the line: "I'll never fall again".
Was it me, or were there shoe-horned Iraq war references? The 'bad guys' that bedecked-in-the-American-colours-Spiderman was fighting were sand (desert! Afghanistan, Iraq!) and kinda oily (even if he wasn't oil, visually he was oil-like and, therefore, an Iraq metaphor), and a symbol for greed. And while Spiderman (ie. America) initially reacted angrily and with venom, he realised that forgiveness and understanding were needed and forgave Sandman (ie. Iraq / Afghanistan) and Venom (ie. oil greed).

That's an interesting theory. One that I might steal to use in my dissertation next year on comic book movies as a form of propaganda.

I'm still struggling why him dancing down the street equals reckless evil. Okay, the dancing was a bit shit and he used his finger like your Dad at a wedding disco but I didn't feel concerned for his emotional well-being (I was more concerned about whether to slap the bastard behind me kicking my seat).
