I already posted this on the original PJ board, but I think it's more appropriate here:
Golden Girls. Not that many people could need convincing, but ...
It is one of the very few TV programmes of any genre that has all its main characters liked. It was an ensemble that really fed of each other (rather like Ally McBeal). Interesting fact was that Estelle Getty, who played Sophia, was only the 2nd eldest of all 4 leads. She also auditioned 4 times, and was first turned down for being too young, but employed a make-up artist to make her look 20 years older, and stayed in character for the duration of the interview. She won a Golden Globe in 1987, played Cher's mother in Mask (1985), and it's good to see she made good use of her fame:
This little piece of VHS treasure was called Young at Heart: Body Conditioning with Estelle
.
Blanche Devereaux and Rose, played by Rue McClanahan and Betty White respectively, would be my favourites as well. Bea Arthur lacked the obvious glammer of these two, but was probably the better actress. My favourite Blanch moment is where she starts fantacising (about men) and has to skoosh herself with a water-spray, to calm herself down. I can laugh at Rose for ages. Would I be the only one who feels just a wee bit upset at how old they are now? Betty is 78, Rue 70, Bea 70, and Estelle is 79. All in their 50's during the shows run, they clearly relished sticking their teeth into roles other women the same age would kill for. Hopefully a reunion special shall come about some time in the near future.
It dealt with themes such as women's friendship, as well as being roommates, which makes it relatable to senior citizens and students alike. Does anyone know of any plans for a D.V.D release?
Hope everyone has interesting comments to make... It's one of those shows that are lots of fun to talk about.
