I remembered just loving watching this at my granny's house when a nipper. Woooh it was so mysterious and grown up. So I bought the DVD.
Um, it's really boring and rather poorly made. Maybe I've just watched the duff ones so far though: I remember a great one with Joan Collins where she demonstrated a yoga move to shift constipation and a rabbit ate it's own baby rabbits. Admittedly this could have been a product of my childhood mentalism.
The theme tune and dancing lady on fire is still cool though.

The Roald Dahl short stories are excellent! My favourite is The Landlady about an old lady who "stuffs" things...

The original set of tales were pretty good, but I remember the standard went downhill pretty quickly and ended up being known as Tales of the Bleeding Obvious around these parts.

One of those shows that seemed mysterious and sexy when you were eight, but apart from the titles it was mostly rubbish.
Roald Dahl's stories are better in books than on screen.

My favourites:
1) Women kills her hubby with a frozen leg of lamb then cooks it and gets the police to eat it.
2) Timothy West and the Royal Jelly, when the baby turns into a giant Bee.
3) Michael Brandon as the thief who has been caught after years on the run after stealin vital government info and all they need for a conviction is his fingerprints.***
4) Eli Wallach as a master criminal who thinks he can outsmart anyone.
CRAP ONES:
1) George Peppard as a Vietnam Vet out to get revenge.
2) Liza Goddard and Peter Davison in some dreadful hotel thing that was very reminisent of Blame it on the Bellboy.
*** The twist being he'd been on the run in Saudi and had been caught thieving and they had chopped the offending hand off meaning he gets away with it.

And of course it was just about the only thing produced by Anglia TV (apart from Sale of the Century - from Norwich, the Quiz of the Week), which means you got to see the shiny knight on horseback (hopefully made by the reception class at a local primary school).

They made Knightmare too did they not? Or am i thinking of someone else?

Yes, you're right - Knightmare was great, although why they always seemed to pick the dullest kids in Britain is beyond me. We now live in Anglia land but they don't use the old cheap logos anymore. Which reminds me that a friend of mine always used to sing an incredibly rude lyric to the Thames TV jingle.

I believe I'm right in saying that "Survival" and, in fact, "Survival Special", was made by Anglia too...

Tales of the unexpected was aired when I was about 7-8ish. It seemed very odd/scary/sexy to me. I didnt always understand the stories but that theme music! It was just ace. Seeing this thread has made me download it to my ipod. Fuck knows what the other customers in Sainsburys must think of the wierd poof mincing down the isles with the bizaar music from TOTU buzzing from his ears.

Early signs of Gaydom, no 174:
Whenever the Tales of the Unexpected titles came on I used to dance around the room like the laydee. Only with my jimjams on. Then I would be sent off to bed, because the programme that would follow was too SHOCKING and HORRIFYING for my young mind.
We read the stories in school, though.

ITV3 is showing Tales... most Fridays and Sundays at around 11. I'd recommend this over buying the DVDs. However, I can't recommend the Twilight Zone box set highly enough.
