A colleague of mine at work is leaving today, and as part of her farewell shindig, she arranged a screening for us. A screening of what has been called "the worst television programme ever made". And, having now seen an episode, I feel that judgement was not entirely unfair.
Cop Rock was broadcast on US TV in 1990, and over here, I believe on BBC 2 in 1992. In the US I think it managed a four month run before being unceremoniously yanked from the schedules. In this country it managed two episodes.
Basically, this was your standard US cop show. It was made by Stephen Bochco and all of the people behind things like Hill Street Blues. It had your mavericks, your unconventional detectives, your gritty realism, and your hard-hitting storylines. With one crucial difference.
Big, honking musical numbers.
I shit you not. Gloriously tacky 80s soft-rock power ballasd in the middle of a supposedly gritty cop show. How on earth this ever got made, I do not know, but it was appalling and yet deeply deeply wonderful at the same time.
Did anyone else ever see this? I think we need to petition for a DVD release right away.

This was also shown to me with the introduction of "worst TV show ever", during 2nd year media studies. Say what you like, but its TV gold man.
Cop Rock was conceived by someone with the biggest balls TV has ever seen. I would love to see the series in its full glory. It was actually quite Dennis Potter. If there's a DVD petition doing the rounds, I'm there!

I remember seeing this. No way was it 'worst programme ever made', it was just weird. The production values were quite good as far as I remember. Yes, it was kind of an American take on a Dennis Potter style, but (being American) no where near as edgy.

I've heard of this but have never seen it. It sounds fabulous - but only after a few drinks, mind.
They're COPS. They SING, they DANCE . . .
Which idiot thought this was a good idea. It would have been like squeezing Jimmy Nail into a leotard and sending him out on to the mean streets of Hong Kong to fight crime. Now there's a thought.

I used to have a few episodes of this on video. It didn't really register with me at the time just how strange it was, although I was quite young. In retrospect it probably wasn't much more off-beat than something like Ally McBeal, but at the time I imagine it was quite revolutionary. It hasn't been officially released on DVD but homemade DVD-R sets turn up on eBay occasionally for about $35-45. Fortunately the sellers I've seen don't ship to the UK, otherwise my wallet would probably be about forty quid lighter.

The detective with his oh-so homerotic arms protruding from his short sleeved shirt...
Er, all about the incongruous musical numbers and blatant miming, yo.
