Report out that daleks will not appear in the new Dr Who series - apparently there was no agreement between the BBC and the Terry Nation estate which co-own the rights to the daleks. It seems the Nation estate were afraid the BBC would make the daleks "too evil". Rather like making Mr Humphries too camp, but there you go.

Where did you hear that from?
And here's me thinking it was a done deal.

BBC website, so it looks fairly good gen. The bit about "too evil" came from elsewhere, but I can't remember where.

Terry Nation and his estate are self-serving twats for doing that. As if the things have any life outside Dr Who. Ridiculous.
Oh well, it might work to the advantage of the programme. Anything to stop it trading on its (not too illustrious towards the end, thank you JNT) history.

I'm going to be controversial and say I never really got the daleks. Genesis of the Daleks aside, because the history behind them made it interesting, whenever they're in a story, it just seems as though the initial shock Oh no, it's the daleks! moment is the high point. If they were to come back, they'd need a major rethink. Remembrance of the Daleks -- effort to make them relevant, they end up looking dodgy and dated. I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm a casual Whovian and/or I missed out on watching it the first time around. I'd just rather see the Cybermen (first and foremost) or The Master or The Rani (Kate O'Mara must be up for it) or someone.

I say Lesley Sharp for the Rani (in a regenerated form). Kate O'Mara should come back as one of the Cheetah People.
The Dalek myth always did outshine the reality afte a while, but they were what made the programme famous in the first place.
But the irony of this situation is that the Nation estate probably withheld the rights because the new series' developers were trying to bring the Daleks into the 21st century.
Some people don't know which side their bread is buttered on.

Oh yes! I know The Rani's a Time Lady but I hadn't considered she could regenerate, just like The Doctor. Definitely Lesley Sharpe in that case.
Do we know what villains we will be getting?
I could look on the site, but BBCi always distracts me. I've ended up reading episode guides to Through The Dragon's Eye...

The b/f spends a lot of his working day reading the posts on Outpost Gallifrey. There might be some info / rumours on there.

Lowculture is about to get a spectacular spin-off Doctor Who site. How exciting is that. ps - would anyone like to help me write it?

My Top Five qualifications for the job: - 1) I am a Who widow. 2) My best adolescent friend was also a Who-ver. 3) It looks like I'll never beat it so I might as well join it 4) I (scarily) think that some of the Big Finish adventures are quite good. 5) John Nathan-Turner is my own personal bogey-man.

The daleks weren't that scary - and they just got silly once they could hover up the stairs! My Mum remembered the first appearance of the daleks back in the 19th C - the BBC kept announcing the arrival of a new monster for Dr Who, but wouldn't reveal what they looked like (no leaks in those days). Finally at the end of the first episode this door opened and out trundled a couple of daleks. Cue music. Needless to say my Mum ruined the moment by going "aaaaw" as she thought they looked cute.

You're right about the cybermen, Si, they always got me behind the couch. I'm a bigger Trekkie than Whovian and so the Cybermen always seem like the predecessors to the Borg. They got ruined through overuse in Voyager, but at least they were scary at first. The daleks have almost collapsed under the weight of their own mythology, parodied on far too many tv shows.

The early Cybermen (Tomb era) were much more scary than the later ones. They began to sound rather like camp panto baddies. And nothing could emerge from Silver Nemesis with its dignity intact. Having said that, Destiny of the Daleks? With the Movellans, who I'm sure David Walliams has based a few of his comic characters on.

Dr Who without the Daleks, that's like Scooby Doo without Scrappy Doo or Godzilla without Godsuki!!
Wait a minute?
Well, I'm no whovian, but my mum did knit me a Tom Baker era long long stripey scarf
