It was like the Seven Cities of Gold, except not as enjoyable.

I watched the TV show first, then read the book, loads of them change gender. It was most confusing. Adder was one that sex swapped. The later series still followed later books such as the introduction of Scarface & the rat called Bully.

Didn't it have a fox in it that was evil?
I think I bought a few issues of the magazine.

I used to be obsessed with Animals of Farthing Wood. In my defence, I was only about seven.

This was terrifying. I remember on one episode when I was about 4 year old seeing Kestrel impale the mouse babies on thorns and mother mouse crying and Kestrel feeling guilty that she did it. There was blood and everything. I also remember stealing a magazine about this when I was about 6 or so.

I KNEW a mouse god killed on thorns! No one believed me that it could be so violent. It really was nasty wasn't it?

The hedgehogs dying on the motorway was as sad as it was inevitable. And also quite funny. But mostly sad. Funny, though. Yet sad. But funny.
I seem to remember the rabbits dying in either a very nasty way, or a very inventive way, or a very humiliating way, or possibly all three. Unless they didn't die at all. Anyone?

The newts died by returning to the wood/construction site and being consumed by an accidental workplace fire if that's any help.

This show was so violent for children's TV. I can't forget the suspense as Fox had to run from that farmer. I think he was shot in the end.

I was obsessed with it as well. I took it all very seriously. It's all coming back now. The bit I can remember best was a few series in when the 2nd generation of foxes were born. There was one called Bold who ran away for ages and one called Dreamer who may have died. I can't remember exactly. It was very violent and scary though, looking back.

I still have all the magazines.
They all snuffed it one way or another in the end, didn't they? Except Fox's other half, who ran off with the leader from that pack of white coloured wolves/foxes (can't remember). She was a ho.

Are you calling Vixen a slag? Are you? ARE YOU!?
Because if you are, I think we're going to have a bit of a problem. If you get me.
Watch yer back, love, watch yer back.

Well, er, yes. She WAS a 'Vixen' afterall, and they have a reputation for putting it about a bit.
But I don't blame her. She's allowed to move on after her bloke snuffs it. But it all seemed very fast.

Yeah, well Fox wasn't all that you know. Vixen spent years supporting his decisions, counselling him when he was unsure, helping him in his battles with the non-real-world-children-aren't-that-naive-blue foxes.
What about her? She gave him the best years of her life, and what did she get in return? Children with ridiculous hippy monikers. She should have left him long before that, she wanted to. We all saw the looks she kept giving Badger. But she was a matyr to her own loyalty, and she deserves better treatment than you give her.

I stand corrected. Not by you Che, but by the Farthing Wood site I just found on t'internet. As far as Vixen-running-off-with-Scarface goes, she did no such thing. Fox actually killed him at the end of series 3, apparently. I must have got my wires crossed, what with it being ten years ago and all. Fox didn't die, either. That was Badger and Scarface, who were possibly merging into a hybrid in my brain to create Fox, which is where I got that idea from. Possibly. Fox did step down from leading the group though, passing the metaphorical baton over to his ridiculously-happy-monikored son Plucky. If you want to reminisce some more, go HERE.

I always thought the names were a bit odd all round. I know there wasn't much else they could do, but starting out with them just being 'Fox' and then all the other Fox's having proper names (if you can count 'Dreamer' as proper)...are the other Foxs also blue/grey in the books?

And is that web-site not taking it a LITTLE too seriously?? Nonsense. How would people write journal articles and Phd. theses about Farthing Wood without such a thing? This knowledge is of vital importance, and we must make sure it is not lost, so that future generations have access to it. I rest my case.

Me and my chav brothers and mates pissed ourselves when the hedgehogs bought it on the road. We added to this delight by constantly rewinding the moment and forcing our little sister (6 at the time) to watch. She's still terrified of squashed hedgehogs, but I am no longer a cunt. My brothers and mates are all still chavs though.
